I get so many messages from women asking me if it’s possible to purchase a brilliant, budget skincare regime for R1000 or under.
The answer is YES! Spend money on treatment products like serums, peels & exfoliators, but skimp on products like face washes, makeup removers and even moisturisers.
Clicks recently sent me a R1000 voucher to spend on whatever I wanted to, so I figured this was the perfect opportunity to do a budget beauty haul showing you which basic skincare items I’d personally choose.
The products featured below would suit anyone with normal, combination, dry or sensitive skin types. I will, however, make recommendations for those with oily / acne skin types where I think my recommendation may be a bit too rich.
REMOVE MAKEUP & DIRT: Bioderma Sensibio H20 (R229 for a 250ml)
Did you know that Bioderma Sensibio H20 was the first EVER cleansing water and launched way before Micellar waters became hugely popular? It’s such an iconic product that one bottle is sold every 2 seconds in the world. What makes the formula so good? It’s unequalled makeup removing power coupled with excellent tolerance. It cleanses, removes makeup, soothes, decongests, hydrates and brings freshness to the skin. I use mine in the morning to refresh my skin, and again in the evening to remove my makeup. While it’s made for sensitive, reactive and fragile skin that gets irritated, everyone can use it. Very oily & acne skin types could rather try the Bioderma Sebium H2O (R199 for a 250ml), but really, the Sensibio works for ALL skin types.
EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: Eucerin Dermatoclean Eye Make-Up Remover (R120.95)
I would also suggest a separate eye makeup remover for waterproof or longwearing makeup. I have sensitive eyes and am yet to find a better, budget bi-phase (oil & water) formula than the Eucerin Dermatoclean Eye Make-Up Remover. I also use it to remove longwearing lipsticks and like that with just one sweep, it removes everything. I NEVER get any irritation or cloudy eyes (you guys know what I mean) when I use this. I cannot recommend it enough.
CLEANSE: Eucerin Dermatoclean Refreshing Cleansing Gel (R144)
Next up is another favourite I’ve chatted about countless times on my blog. I prefer a facial wash to a cleansing cream, and the Eucerin Dermatoclean Refreshing Cleansing Gel is my go-to. Aside from being SUPER gentle, it lathers well, is fragrance free, and tested on sensitive skin. It cleans the skin thoroughly without leaving it tight or dry. A little goes long way too, making it outstanding value for money.
MOISTURISE: Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion (R360)
The function of a moisturiser is to prevent the skin from drying out by keeping moisture in the skin. It sits on the surface of the skin and because of its large molecule, cannot penetrate (serums are designed with a small molecule that penetrates deeply).
Whenever women ask me to recommend a great, basic budget moisturiser, I tell them to look at Cetaphil.The Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion is my everyday go-to and hubby & daughter love it too. This lightweight creamy lotion absorbs quickly, keeping the skin hydrated for up to 24 hours. It’s fragrance & colourant-free (two of the biggest triggers for skin issues) and won’t clog pores. The formula contains an Epidermal Replenishing Complex that includes a combination of 5 ingredients that hydrate the skin: Glycerin, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Panthenol and macadamia nut oil. It can be used by anyone, even infants and those suffering with psoriasis and eczema. Oh, and it’s not just for the face – it can be used on the body too. I absolutely LOVE it.
Those with oily skin should rather opt for the Cetaphil Oil Control Moisturiser (R238) which is formulated for acne.
PROTECT: Vichy UV Protect Skin Defense Daily Care – Anti Dullness BB Cream SPF50 (R240)
This is a hybrid product that combines a moisturiser, BB Cream, and SPF of 50 & a cocktail of antioxidants in one. It’s just about everything I look for in a daily UV protector. It’s very lightweight, and, if you need more coverage (I do), foundation applies well over it. It’s important that your sunscreen contains antioxidants as these make the formula perform even better. Oily and acne skin types should try the Vichy UV Protect Skin Defense Daily Care – Anti Shine Cream (R240) has the same properties of the formula above but doesn’t contain a tint and has additional mattifying properties.
