YSL rose 3

I love a rose-based fragrance. In fact, next to Neroli, rose is one of my favourite scents. So, I was thrilled when I received a bottle of Majestic Rose by YSL to try. This fragrance is part of a very high-end line by YSL that launched in South Africa last year called the Oriental Collection.

There are four fragrances in the Oriental Collection range; Majestic Rose, Splendid Wood, Noble Leather and Supreme Bouquet. All are exquisitely constructed, totally beguiling scents. Inspiration for the collection was drawn from the alluring East and pays homage to Yves Saint Laurent himself and his love for this region. In 1980, along with his partner, designer Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent bought the now infamous Jardin Majorelle and transformed it into what is today one of the most visited sites in Morocco. Such was his love for the region.

This opulent yet mysterious ‘Majestic Rose’ is a woody floral fragrance and is constructed around the dense blossom of May Rose. The notes are as follows:

Top Note: Raspberry

Middle Notes: Rose & saffron

Base Notes: Oud & Guaiac woods

The top notes of raspberry are hardly recognizable (well, to me anyway) as at first spritz I was immediately struck by the scent of heady rose and sexy Oud wood. There is also a saffron and Guaiac wood accord that gives the fragrance an understated, sexy and very mysterious vibe.

Because of the scent’s woody floral nature, it lasts for a good 6 hours + on the skin. I also adore the gold glass bottle adorned with the YSL monogram.

All four fragrances in the collection retail for R2900 (each) for an 80ml EDP and are available at selected Edgars stores.
