There’s something undeniably exciting about slipping on a new pair of sunglasses or spectacles. The right frame can completely shift your mood, sharpen your style, and bring a fresh energy to even the simplest outfit. So, when I was invited by Essilor Luxottica to their Winter ’26 media preview last week, I couldn’t wait to see what the new season had in store.

Set against the rolling vineyards of Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards in Franschhoek, the event unfolded under gloriously sunny skies — the perfect setting to explore the latest in eyewear. And, as someone currently searching for a new pair of spectacles, I happily embraced the opportunity to try on almost every frame in sight.

One of the strongest emerging trends for Winter ’26 is what’s being called Droopy Curves — a softer, more fluid silhouette inspired by organic design and subtle 70s glamour. Think gently downturned lines, relaxed elegance, and shapes that feel as though they’ve been naturally sculpted rather than sharply constructed.

Sunglasses by Michael Kors

My personal obsession from this trend? A gorgeous pair of sunglasses by Michael Kors that instantly landed at the very top of my wish list. Effortless, flattering, and quietly glamorous, they perfectly captured the mood of the season.

Another major direction is the Pilot Craze trend — a refined evolution of the classic aviator. Beloved for its retro heritage and enduring versatility, the pilot frame continues to embody confidence and understated sophistication.

The style that stole my heart

What makes this trend especially appealing is how wearable it is across genders and personal styles. Whether styled casually for everyday wear or paired with tailoring for a polished look, these frames feel timeless yet entirely modern.

Spectacle frames by Jimmy Choo

Interestingly, two of my favourite spectacle styles from the preview fell into this category. Sleek metal frames, softly tinted lenses, and elegant proportions gave the pilot silhouette a more elevated, fashion-forward feel.

Then came the surprise of the day: cat-eye frames.

I’ve always assumed cat-eye spectacles simply weren’t for me, but a stunning tortoise shell pair from Jimmy Choo completely changed my mind. Part of the Sculpted Cats trend, these frames reinterpret the traditional cat-eye through a more architectural lens. Sharp angles, dimensional beveling, and slightly irregular symmetry transform a familiar shape into something bold, modern, and unapologetically glamorous.

The same aesthetic carried beautifully into a pair of khaki green sunglasses from Prada (above) that I instantly fell for. The colour alone felt refreshing — softer than black, yet equally sophisticated — while the sculptural frame added just the right amount of drama.

For those who favour timeless classics, Intellectual Rounds continue to make a strong statement. These librarian-inspired circular frames offer a refined take on preppy style, balancing intellect with quiet elegance. There’s something deeply charming about round spectacles; they instantly add character while remaining polished and versatile.

Spectacle frames by Ray-Ban

What makes this trend particularly beautiful is the attention to materials and finishes. Honey-toned havanas, warm tortoiseshells, and delicate metallic details bring softness and depth to the frames. In my opinion, Ray-Ban interpreted this trend exceptionally well with a collection of cool, wearable round spectacles that felt both classic and contemporary.

Colour also plays a significant role this season. Rather than harsh blacks, designers are embracing what’s being described as Midnight Darks — rich, moody shades like truffle, plum, oxblood, and deep wine. These tones create depth and elegance while feeling softer and more nuanced than traditional black frames.

Alongside this is the beautifully organic Mineral Striation palette. Inspired by the natural movement of stone and earth, this trend introduces warm browns, muted greens, teal blues, and fluid marbled textures that evoke calmness and balance. The overall effect feels grounded, sophisticated, and quietly luxurious.

Perhaps the most playful development, however, comes through Expressive Lenses. Lenses are no longer simply functional; they’ve become a key part of personal expression. Soft pinks, violets, smoky blues, and subtle gradients add personality and emotion to frames, while delicate mirrored finishes bring a modern, fashion-led edge.

If Winter ’26 proves anything, it’s that eyewear has evolved far beyond practicality. Spectacles and sunglasses have become true style signatures — expressive, sculptural, and deeply personal. And after trying on more frames than I care to admit, I’m still no closer to choosing just one pair.
