While many complain about the Cape’s cold, rainy and wind-swept winter days, local food lovers know this season holds a particular kind of magic. Winter in Cape Town is when some of the city’s most exciting restaurants unveil their seasonal menus — thoughtful, comforting offerings that invite slower lunches, longer conversations and the simple pleasure of eating well. Better still, many of these experiences are offered at wonderfully accessible prices, making winter dining one of the city’s best-kept pleasures.

As the weather shifts and appetites begin craving richer, heartier fare, there’s something deeply satisfying about settling into a warm restaurant while the rain falls outside. Last week, I was invited to experience Galjoen’s newly launched winter lunch menu, and it felt perfectly suited to the season.

Part of The Belly Restaurant Group, founded by Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn, Galjoen has quietly established itself as one of Cape Town’s most distinctive seafood destinations. Its philosophy is refreshingly uncomplicated: locally sourced, responsibly caught seafood prepared with restraint, care and confidence. There’s no unnecessary fuss here — just beautifully considered food that allows exceptional ingredients to speak for themselves.
This year’s winter lunch menu embraces that same ethos, but with a softer, more nostalgic touch. It’s the kind of meal that encourages you to exhale a little and linger at the table.

The experience begins simply, with fresh bread accompanied by a steaming pot of mussels. The broth alone is reason enough to visit — fragrant, deeply comforting and ideal for slow, unapologetic bread-dipping between conversation.

From there came fish and chips, though this was fish and chips elevated in the unmistakably understated way that Galjoen does so well. The fish was impossibly fresh, encased in a crisp golden batter, while every accompanying detail felt carefully considered without ever becoming overly complicated.

Alongside it were crisp chips paired with a homemade tomato jam, a vibrant Asian-inspired slaw that was easily one of the standout dishes of the afternoon, and velvety homemade mayonnaise that worked beautifully with both the fish and the chips.

Dessert arrived warm and indulgent — exactly what a winter meal calls for. On the day we visited, the kitchen served a tipsy tart accompanied by banana ice cream and caramel sauce. Rich without feeling heavy, it brought the meal to a gentle and satisfying close.

As always, the kitchen leaves space for a few unexpected delights along the way, guided by seasonal ingredients and whatever feels right in the moment. In our case, this meant delicate little s’mores served with coffee — playful, nostalgic and impossible not to enjoy.

The winter lunch menu runs from 1 May until the end of July 2026 and is available from Thursday to Saturday at R450 per person.
For diners wanting a more immersive experience, Galjoen’s full multi-course menu is served in the evenings from Monday to Saturday at R850 per person. It offers a broader exploration of the kitchen’s seasonal approach, with dishes shaped by the day’s freshest catch and the ever-changing rhythm of the sea.
At its heart, Galjoen remains deeply committed to thoughtful, seasonal cooking that honours the integrity and beauty of South Africa’s local seafood — and this winter menu captures that philosophy beautifully.
Galjoen is located in Cape Town’s historic CBD at 99 Harrington Street. Please reserve your table online via www.galjoencpt.co.za.
