Dermalogica overnight retinol repair

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; if you’re concerned with lines, wrinkles and anti-ageing in general, then you really should invest in a skincare product that contains retinol.

Retinol (or Vitamin A) is recognized as one of the anti-aging big guns as it has the ability to connect to almost any skin cell and tell it to behave like a healthy, younger cell. In addition, it’s an antioxidant, so can minimize free radical damage, preventing wrinkles and boosting collagen production. Retinol has also proven to be extremely effective at minimizing acne and eczema, while improving discolorations and fine lines and wrinkles.

To say I was excited when Dermalogica launched their new Age Smart Overnight Retinol Repair formula, R1350 (BUY IT HERE) is somewhat of an understatement! I love all the products in the Age Smart line, and count the Overnight Repair Serum as one of my favourites. Now there’s a formula with Retinol – Hooray for that!

The Overnight Retinol Repair works to accelerate skin renewal. Active micro-encapsulated pure Retinol increases collagen production and cell turnover. In addition, powerful peptides and Vitamin C fights signs of aging including uneven skin tone and discoloration. The formula has a bio-energized Copper amino acid complex that visibly reduces wrinkles and improves skin firmness.

Now, it has to be pointed out that not all skin types can tolerate Retinol. It can cause irritation like redness and flaking, especially for those who have never used it before. The rule of thumb when FIRST using a product with Retinol is not to apply it daily. Rather, apply a little every other day or mix it with your moisturiser before applying. This allows the skin to gradually acclimatize to it. Because of this, the Overnight Retinol Repair comes with a Buffer cream (think of it as a basic moisturiser) that is formulated without any fragrance, colour or parabens. You simply apply one part Retinol to three parts Buffer cream and apply (at night). Once your skin has acclimatized, you can use the Overnight Retinol Repair alone, before or mixed with your favourite Dermalogica moisturiser.

I also need to add that when you’re using a Retinol product, it is essential to protect the skin during the day with a good SPF of at least 50. Retinol can make skin sun sensitive, and this can lead to pigmentation if skin is not properly protected. To be on the safe side, not only do I use a sunscreen over my day moisturiser, I also ensure my foundation or BB cream contains a decent SPF of at least 30.

I’ve been using my Overnight Retinol Repair for a month now, and aside from its general anti-aging benefits, I’m amazed at how it makes my pores appear tighter and leaves my skin with a real glow. Also, when I use a retinol-based product, I don’t EVER seem to break out. If you’re 30+ and concerned with the onset of fine lines, wrinkles, discolouration and general signs of aging like a lack of radiance, give this a bash – you won’t be disappointed.
