mani edge 3

Almost two years ago – around the time I started In My Bag – I did a nail post announcing what a purist I was when it came to my nails. And I was – neutrals, reds and black where my go-to nail colour choices.

Gosh, how things have changed. In a short space of time, I’ve done an about-turn and have rocked Lego nails and nail art (gasp!).

The one thing I NEVER thought I’d EVER wear was a glitter topcoat. Let me explain why…

My dearly departed granny was fanatical about her nails. Even though she was a housewife (and did ALL her own housework), she always had the most beautiful nails. They were (very) long, painted pink and always, ALWAYS coated with either a gold, silver or red glitter topcoat. My mom (who was very stylish) always said how kitsch she thought they looked. And they did (for that era) – it was the 90’s and everyone was embracing a more minimalist aesthetic.

This week, I finally embraced glitter topcoats. And I just adore the effect. What I’ve realised it that they are just the thing to add a bit of edge and interest to ones mani.

As an example, I love how you can take a simplistic (yet stylish) white manicure up a style notch or two by painting over it with a red and blue glitter topcoat. If you find the effect too much, just paint the nail on your ring fingers with the top coat.  My favourite look of the lot is on my ring finger. I love the combination of the pale blue with the gold, black and pink glitter – This is a mani Marie Antoinette would have platzed for! I also adore the gold over the black – it has a very 70’s ‘disco fever’ vibe. Again, I’d paint just one nail.
