Last week I was invited to attend the MAC winter make-up trend presentation in Johannesburg. This is one preview that no beauty gal worth her blusher want’s to miss, as one gets amazing insight into what the key make-up trends will be for the next season.
The presentation coincided with MBFW (Mercedes Benz Fashion Week), and because MAC were the make-up sponsors, I was lucky enough to be taken backstage to watch their crazy, talented team create the most beautiful looks on the models.

But back to the trends. While many of them seem rather OTT, the great thing about the one’s I’ve showcased is that one can adapt them for most occasions.
My favourite trend, ‘Crafted Nude’ (above) is all about beautiful, barely-there make-up and gorgeous, glowing skin. Even though it’s a winter trend, I think its great look for summer because it supposed to look like you’re wearing no make-up.
The key product for making this trend work is the MAC Prep + Prime Essential Oils. This little beauty douses the skin with moisture and gives it a glorious, radiant glow.
Get the look:
- Douse skin with Fix + Spray, then apply a little Prep + Prime Essentail Oils .all over face.
- Conceal under the eyes with Pro Longwear Concealer to diminish any dark shadows.
- Elongate the nose by highlighting it with some Mineralize Skinfinish Powder.
- Place a Blot Film, place onto shiny areas to absorb excess oil – one sheet should suffice. Avoid using powder as it will create a cakey effect.
- Apply MAC Mineral CC Colour Correcting Powder over any enlarged pores to minimize their appearance.
- Finish with Mineralize Skinfinish Powder on cheeks, applying it just above the apples of the cheeks – this lifts the face.
- Apply a little Lip Conditioner onto your pout to ensure it’s soft and nourished, with just a hint of shine.
- Apply a coat of Extended Play Lash mascara to lashes to finish off the look.
‘Off Colour’ was another trend I really liked, and will definitely be sporting elements from this look this when the weather starts to cool. This trend is about the placement of conventional products on the face using unconventional colours.
Key colours include mushroom, taupe, lilac, peach, apricot and terracotta for eyes. Browns and deep berry are a must for lips.
Again, this look calls for beautifully buffed, almost matte skin with emphasis on the lips and highlights on the upper cheekbones. A light wash of colour applied over the whole eye area, and just underneath gives the eyes an almost doe-eyed effect.
The hero product here is the MAC Satin Lipstick in ‘Photo’ – a deep chocolate brown that gives an otherwise pale face an almost gothic kind of glamour.
‘Reflection’ was another trend I really liked. Eyes take center stage with this look and are given accents of sparkle that gives the impression of an almost wet look. Skin should be prepped with MAC Fix + Spray and Mineralize Skinfinish powder needs to be buffed into the skin to create a perfect canvas. Lips are left nude with just a touch of clear gloss.
‘Rein Supreme’ is all about the architectural liner, with MAC Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel in Waveline as the must-have product. The key to making liner work for you is finding a shape that compliments your eye, while playing with interesting colour. Blue is the hero hue of this trend, but metallic, red and even yellow will work – depending on how brave you are. It’s all about keeping it fresh, simple.
Thanks MAC for including me in this wonderfully informative, fun launch. As always, I had a blast, learnt a lot and come home loving MAC even more that I did previously. You guys rock!
