Just a two hour drive from Cape Town, in the quaint town of Robertson, is the Van Loveren Family Vineyards. This is one of those rare gems where history, hospitality, and heavenly wines come together in perfect harmony. My recent visit to South Africa’s leading family-owned winery was nothing short of magical — an afternoon spent sipping, strolling, and savoring every moment.

From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in the welcoming atmosphere that Van Loveren is known for. The setting is serene, with lush gardens, rolling vineyards, and mountain views that stretch as far as the eye can see. My first stop? A wine tasting on the deck, perfectly positioned to take in the panoramic garden views.

Van Loveren offers a variety of tasting experiences to suit every palate and curiosity — from chocolate and wine to cheese, charcuterie, and even nougat and nut pairings. There are also non-alcoholic options, thoughtfully designed for both adults and little ones.

I chose the “Shades of Chardonnay” tasting — a delightful journey through crisp, elegant whites that would impress any fan of the varietal. Each pour was a story in itself.

Feeling blissfully relaxed, I made my way to Christina’s Bistro for lunch. The vibe here is casual yet refined, with a menu that champions locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

While their thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers were tempting, I opted for the Caesar salad — and what a decision that was! Generously topped with grilled chicken and crispy bacon bits, it was the most delicious Caesar I’ve ever had.

The dressing was perfectly balanced, and every ingredient tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Everything at the bistro is made from scratch, with a strong commitment to reducing food miles.

But Van Loveren is more than just a winery — it’s a destination rooted in family and legacy. Since 1937, the Retief family has crafted wines that tell a story of tradition and innovation. Today, the estate offers much more than tastings: from guided cellar tours and botanical garden walks to hiking and mountain biking trails, there’s something for everyone.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a foodie, or just someone seeking a tranquil escape, Van Loveren delivers with heart and authenticity. I’m already planning my return.
