There are two key products you should always have in your beauty arsenal: One is a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield the skin from damaging UVA/UVB rays, the other is an overnight serum that repairs damage done during the day by environmental aggressors like pollution, blue light and UV rays.
Today, I’m reviewing two of my favourite’s from local beauty brand SKOON.
SUNNYBONANI Day Defense Sun Cream SPF 20 R759.95 – BUY
Use my discount code: Candice15 to get 15% off your SUNNYBONANI
A true sun guardian in every sense of the word! This lightweight, mineral based sunscreen glides onto the skin and absorbs really quickly leaving no sticky feel. It’s a great everyday sunscreen option and an excellent base for makeup too. This sunscreen is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t block pores or cause breakouts.
What is a mineral sunscreen?
It’s important to understand the difference between a mineral and chemical sunscreen because both shield your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.
Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals that create a reaction in the skin in which UV light – once absorbed – is converted into heat and that heat dissipates from the skin.
Mineral sunscreens contain minerals (like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) that sit on the skin’s surface and physically prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin.
The mineral sunscreens of the past had a bad rap as they used to be quite thick and left a grey cast on darker skin. Thankfully this is no longer the case. Also, a benefit of mineral sunscreens is that they are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
SUNNYBONANI (don’t you just LOVE the name?) contains both Zinc oxide and Titanium Dioxide so it would be an excellent choice for those wanting a “clean” sunscreen without any chemicals. Vitamin C has been added to the formula along with Rooibos – both these ingredients provide antioxidant benefits and actually work to make the sunscreen even more effective.
Apply one to two pumps daily to face, neck & décolletage.
This sunscreen is NOT water resistant and while it can be used when beach or pool side, you have to reapply it after swimming.
Tip: Always ensure your sunscreen is Broad Spectrum. This means it protects from both UVB rays – the ones that burn the skin – and UVA rays – the ones that penetrate deep into the skin, causing ageing.
NITELOVE Anti-Pollution Overnight Serum R549.95 – BUY
Use my discount code: Candice15 to get 15% off your NITELOVE
Serums are so important because they penetrate deep into the dermis where they are able to repair and fortify the skin.
NITELOVE (again, how clever is the name?) is a powerhouse overnight serum that is packed with pollution-busing ingredients that helps the skin repair daily damage from sun, smog and blue light while you sleep.
The formula contains Niacinamide that can reverse and prevent signs of skin ageing, smooth and brighten skin, calm inflammation and redness, reduce hyper-pigmentation, decrease the appearance of pores AND hydrate and support the skin barrier. Honeybush extract is a great anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant qualities. Three sizes of Hyaluronic Acid have been added to plump and boost skin hydration.
Apply 1-2 drops of this serum at night onto clean skin before applying your moisturiser.
Tip: Use your fingertips to gently apply your serum to face & neck, then, lightly tap, pat (in the beauty industry we call this the “fairy finger tap & pat”) and smooth out.
