Did you know that rose gold jewellery was popular with Russian royalty way back in the 1800’s? However, it wasn’t until 1920’s that it became more mainstream. It’s taken a quiet backseat for decades, however, in recent years, it’s been gaining in popularity and is currently far preferred over white or yellow gold.

I sat down with Candice Ilic, co-owner of Verus Fine Jewellery, to chat about rose gold and take a peek at the brands new fine jewellery collection.

What exactly is rose gold?

18-carat rose gold is made using mostly yellow gold, combined with copper to give it its pink tinge. Silver is then added to soften the pink shade, while also making the metal more malleable and easy to craft. “Rosegold can certainly be described as a new classic,” says Candice. “It’s part of a new movement in fine jewellery and has lost its formality, becoming more playful and individual. I’d certainly describe rose gold as a new classic, simply because it’s elegant and timeless.”

“When it comes to actual design trends, delicate pieces that you can layer are all the rage these days,” says Candice. “Jewellery has lost its formality, and today we see women wearing their diamonds casually with jeans and a t-shirt, or vamping it up with a sexy number. Delicate jewellery is like a second skin, and is so easy to wear. Younger women especially are rejecting the look of large, brash pieces and the aesthetic of jewellery as an object. Your jewellery should be embraced and worn every day. All our Verus pieces are handmade, and nothing is plated, making them extra special.”

Caring for Rose gold

Chemicals can damage or tarnish all metals, including rose gold, so avoid exposure to things like chlorine, household cleaning products, perfume, body lotion and sunblock.

When asked to describe the Verus Fine Jewellery brand, Candice had the following comment: “At Verus, we love the complement of opposites. We design fine rose gold jewellery that can, and should, be worn with attitude! We use diamonds – but we don’t like froth and bling – rather we believe the soft prettiness of rose gold softens the precious stones hardness. For far too long now, fine jewellery has seen little change. However, finally there’s an element of excitement building around investing in classic pieces. Rose gold is part of this new energy.”
