Tucked away just a scenic three-hour drive from Cape Town, the De Hoop Nature Reserve remains one of South Africa’s most enchanting and biodiverse destinations. Spanning an impressive 36,000 hectares in the Overberg region, De Hoop is more than just a nature reserve — it’s a sanctuary for flora, fauna, and the human soul.
My recent return (read about my previous stay HERE) to this World Heritage Site reminded me why I fell in love with it the first time around. With its vast plains of fynbos, 70km of untouched coastline, and the dramatic Vlei that stretches across 19km of protected wetland, De Hoop remains a place of serene wonder — a place that stills the mind and awakens the senses.
Nature, History and Harmony
Once a working farm founded in the 1700s, De Hoop became a nature reserve in 1957, and by the mid-70s, it was fully dedicated to preserving the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004, UNESCO officially recognised its ecological importance, cementing its status as a conservation treasure.
The diversity here is staggering. Over 260 bird species, 86 mammal species (including Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Caracal, and even the elusive Leopard), and a kaleidoscope of indigenous plant life call this place home.
The wetland, listed as a Ramsar site, is a paradise for birders and nature photographers alike.
The De Hoop Experience
Whether you’re visiting as a family, a couple, or a solo nature-seeker, De Hoop caters to all.
From lazy days spent lounging on pristine beaches and exploring turquoise rock pools to scenic game drives and invigorating fynbos hikes, there’s something for everyone.
I stayed at the beautiful Cloete Suites, located within the Opstal area, a central hub close to the restaurant, bar, and curio shop.
These suites combine rustic elegance with modern comfort — think airy rooms, Voctorian bathtubs, and views framed by ancient fig trees planted in the 1950s.
The Fig Tree Restaurant remains a highlight. Bright, breezy, and bathed in natural light, it offers delicious seasonal meals and local wines. I highly recommend their pizzas (served at lunch) or fresh batter fried fish — a personal favourite.
Another highlight was the eco-cruise on the Vlei, a tranquil way to spot otters, birds, and even porcupines.
Morning cruises come with coffee and pastries, while sunset voyages offer wine and snacks. It’s the kind of experience that reconnects you with nature — and yourself.
A New Chapter: Human Origins Exhibition
One of the most exciting developments at De Hoop is the opening of the ‘Origins of Early Southern Sapiens Behaviour’ exhibition — a powerful new addition to the reserve’s offerings.
Launched in January 2024, this exhibition is a collaboration between De Hoop Collection, CapeNature, and leading academic institutions like the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Bergen in Norway.
Curated by Craig Foster (of My Octopus Teacher fame) and archaeologist Petro Keene, the exhibition sheds light on the archaeological treasures of the Southern Cape, including discoveries from Blombos Cave and Klipdrift Shelter.
The exhibition beautifully explores our shared origins as Homo sapiens, tracing the rich tapestry of human behaviour and creativity dating back over 120,000 years. It’s an emotional and awe-inspiring journey, blending science, art, and storytelling — and it’s now permanently housed right in the heart of De Hoop.
As William Stephens, founder of the De Hoop Collection, shared: “The exhibition will enhance the cultural experiences of our visitors and remind us that we are all one.”
Why De Hoop Still Captivates
There are many natural wonders in the world, but few offer the combination of unspoiled wilderness, rich heritage, and heartfelt hospitality quite like De Hoop. Whether you’re here for the whales, the walks, the wildlife, or the whispers of ancient humanity, De Hoop always delivers something profound.
With its range of accommodation — from charming Cape Dutch cottages and luxury suites to family-friendly self-catering options — De Hoop continues to be an ideal escape from city life.
Book your stay, pack your binoculars, and get ready to experience a destination that moves you deeply — in every sense of the word.
