The incredible story of how the Maybelline brand came into being reads a bit like a fairytale, and I thought I’d share it with you all today.
The year was 1913, and a young Chicago based chemist by the name of Thomas Lyle Williams was in a real dilemma about how to help his sister, Mabel. You see, Mabel was in love with a man who was besotted with someone else…
Mabel Williams was seeking out ways to enhance her beauty, so she could attract the attention of her beloved. Thomas noticed how she used petroleum jelly on her lashes and eyebrows to enhance them.

Being a chemist, Thomas decided to help Mabel increase her allure by adding coal dust to the petroleum jelly, which served to darken her lashes and brows far more dramatically. The products worked, and in 1915 Mabel got her man.
In the same year, Thomas founded what would become the global industry giant, Maybelline.
The first product that the brand launched was Maybelline Cake Mascara, called Lash-Brow-Ine. And the rest, as they say, is history!
