It’s summer in sunny South Africa, and we’re all enjoying the beautiful outdoor lifestyle our country affords us. While most of us are very aware of the dangers of the sun, and (hopefully) protect our skins accordingly, not many of us stop to consider the effects of UV rays on our eyes.

In a nutshell, no UV is good for the eyes, and over exposure to both UVA & UVB light has a cumulative effect, eventually causing eye diseases like cataracts and others that can threaten vision.

The skin around the eye is also extremely thin and delicate. It’s no secret that UV rays accelerate ageing, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Aside from protecting our eyes with a good pair of sunnies, we also need to take extra care when looking after them. It’s essential to remove all make-up with a good quality eye make up remover, and never pull or drag the skin when cleansing.

To help you care for and protect your eyes, I’ve got a lovely hamper up for grabs from Skinderm – a proudly SA, cosmeceutical range that recently launched. The products contain a unique, super potent Living Skin® Complex that reactivates environmentally challenged skin, showing optimal results quickly.

The hamper includes the following products:

Processed with Snapseed.

Skinderm pure eye + lip make-up remover (R220)
This super gentle make-up remover effectively cleanses the delicate eye and lip area to remove all traces of makeup, including waterproof mascara and longwearing lipstick. It’s suitable for all skin types. Simply spray a little product onto some cotton wool, gently press onto eyes for a few seconds, and then wipe off. I found this super gentle (and I have very sensitive eyes) and like that it isn’t in the least bit oily.

Skinderm anti-ageing eye + lip concentrate R320
This firming eye and lip cream assists with hydrating the delicate eye and lip area. It helps reinforce the skin’s structure, improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The texture is lightweight and absorbs quickly.

Skinderm derm protect SPF 25 R295

This broad-spectrum sun protection cream helps to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UVA and UVB, preventing sun damage and premature ageing. Obviously, this is a skincare product and shouldn’t be used around the eyes! It is suitable for all skin types, goes on beautifully and is not oily at all.

Below are some handy eye care tips to remember:

  • Whenever you’re outdoors, wear sunglasses with proper UV protection. If your glasses don’t offer 100% UV protection, they could be doing your eyes more harm than good! When purchasing glasses, always opt for a larger frame (think wraparounds). The larger the frame, the more protection you’ll get.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Experts recommend at least two liters per day to keep your skin and eyes hydrated.
  • When outdoors, wear a wide brimmed hat that measures about 8cm to help to block UV-B rays from reaching your eyes.
  • Remember, a cloudy day spent outside without proper protection is just as damaging as a sunny one!
  • Avoid the midday sun, as this is when the strength of the sun is at its maximum and UV is at its peak.

I’m throwing these sunnies from Vogue Eyewear into the giveaway too!

Along with the Skinderm hamper, I also have a gorgeous pair of Vogue sunglasses from the new ‘Light and Shine’ collection valued at R1390 that I’m including in the giveaway. These babies are spot on trend with their mirrored lenses, and I think the blue arms and silver rims give them a little bit of edge. You can take a proper look at them on the Vogue Eyewear website HERE
