Last week I showcased my 3 favourite hairstyles seen on the runway at NYFW SS/17 – created using TRESemmé products. Today, I’m going to show you how easy it is to recreate my favourite look of the 3: The Personalized Wave

THE INSPIRATION

I love the effortless, very summery look of this style with its sexy, laid back vibe. And, while my hair isn’t as long as the models, this is the kind of style that works just as well on medium, shoulder length hair as it does on long hair.

HOW TO: CREATE THE PERSONALIZED WAVE

CREATE PERFECT CURLS USING A BARREL TONG

Even though using a barrel tong may seem pretty intuitive, it can be a bit tricky to master the technique. Below are my 3 top tips for getting it right,

  • The way you hold a curling iron or tong and which way your turn it is very important when curling your hair. Always hold the curling tong vertically with the clasp facing forward.
  • Clamp hair in small sections, about 5cm from the ends.
  • Curl hair OUT and AWAY from your face, all the way up to the root. Hold for 5 – 10 seconds.

PREVENT YOUR CURLS FROM DROOPING

Okay, so your curls are on point, but how do you ensure they stay looking full and bouncy the whole day?

  1. Allow your curls to cool down –Years of watching the countries top hair stylists perform their magic on models and celebs have taught me one thing: Allow your curls to cool down and set. But why, you may wonder? Allowing your hair to cool will close the cuticle and set the curl in place, making it last longer. Once you’ve created a curl, gently slide the barrel iron out, and using (preferably) a duckbill grip, clip the curl against your head for at least 6 minutes (10 minutes would be ideal, if you have the time).
  2. Using the correct hairstyling products help – Styling products like mousse help curls last longer. After applying a heat protection product, apply a bit of mousse to damp hair – working from the mid length to ends, before drying. This will help the curls set better.
  3. Use the correct barrel size for your hairs length – This is SO important because curling wands come in different sizes. If your hair is short or medium length (like mine), opt for a 1-inch barrel size. If you have longer hair, or want large curls, try a 1.5-inch wand.
  4. Over processed, dry and damaged hair just doesn’t curl well – PERIOD! Treat your hair to regular trims and treatments to boost its condition.
  5. Curls hate being touched! Resist the temptation to play with your curls, as this WILL make them drop.
  6. Finish with hairspray. Lightly misting your style with a hairspray will prevent your curls from drooping.
