verus new hold

Accessories and jewellery often lend a truly unique flavour to our look. Over the past few years, the layering and jewellery-stacking trend has gained momentum, and with good reason too! Done correctly, layering makes for a real style statement that’s part edgy, part fun. But, layering takes some know how to get right.

For todays post, I sat down with my good friend, Candice Illic from Verus Fine jewellery to get her top stacking and jewellery layering tips. All the Verus pieces used in the shoot below are all handmade, using 18ct rose gold, brilliant polished champagne diamonds, semi-faceted raw diamonds and black diamonds.

When explaining the ethos behind the Verus brand, Candice mentions how all pieces are deliberately delicate, with a strong Scandinavian influence. “It’s a collection to be worn with boyfriend jeans and a T-shirt, but could also work beautifully for a formal wedding,” she explains. “Essentially, the collection is about a subtle rebellion from the mainstream bling.”

HOW TO LAYER NECKLACESverus necklace 101

“The beauty with stacking is that you can choose how to wear your jewellery, giving you the freedom to truly represent your style” – Candice

  • If your necklaces have pendants, they should sit at different levels – look for chains with 2 attachments loops as these will allow you to vary the pendants position.
  • Fine chains work best, but try to have different degrees of fine. Whatever you do, resist the urge to layer with too many necklaces, as this can start looking cumbersome.
  • Personally, I like to stick with the same colour metal, but be sure to freely mix your diamonds with other stones.
  • Varying the size and or shape of your pendants works really well.

LAYERING RINGS

  • Stick to one metal – It will bring all the different elements together, while creating something funky, rather than messy.
  • The rings should be quite refined, and on the delicate side.
  • Styles of rings that work well for stacking include a simple eternity ring, a single stone ring or a plain ring with an interesting gold detail.
  • The contrast between brilliant champagne diamonds and black diamonds works really well and makes for an eye-catching statement.
  • Midi rings (worn on the upper part of the fingers) are very fashionable right now, and add real edge to a look. So, don’t be afraid to wear rings on both the lower and upper portion of your finger.
  • Look for interesting shapes and designs on rings – woven metal, straight bars, circles and triangles all work well.
  • Create a balance between heavily stacked fingers by ensuring at least on or two fingers remain bare. This will prevent your hands from looking like they are over styled. You want an effortless, almost incidental look. Not one that’s too forced.

GETTING LAYERING RIGHT WITH EARRINGS

  • You can, and should wear different earrings in either ear!
  • If you wear black diamonds on your left ear, then stick to black diamonds on your right ear too, but vary the style and size. Your really don’t need to wear the same earrings in each ear!
  • A good investment is always a pair of solitaire diamond studs in white or champagne – spend as much as you can afford and look at them as an investment.
  • The Fancy Fan earring (pictured above) is a great piece for those wanting to try the stacking trend, but a little unsure of how to.
  • An ear cuff is also a good investment and easy to wear on its own, or coupled with other pieces.

LAYERING BRACELETS

  • Rocking the layering trend is probably easiest with bracelets and bangles.
  • My advice is to mix it up, and go with what feels right.
  • Choose one arm and leave the other bare, or with a watch.
  • While there are no real rules when it comes to bracelet layering, bear in mind that you want to avoid your bracelets or wrist chains overlapping and eclipsing one another.
