When I first became a beauty editor in 2004, there were no dry shampoo formulas on the market in South Africa. I remember paging through international magazines like Allure and Vogue, often seeing rave reviews about this wonder beauty product. This was something I needed – why couldn’t we find any here?
About a year and a half later they arrived, en masse. Suddenly, my beauty desk was swamped with them – from high-end versions to budget friendly ones. And (thankfully) they’re still pouring in. I now wonder how I ever lived without my trusty dry shampoo, as just like my moisturiser, I use it on a daily basis.
Having tried just about every single brand available locally, I have to give kudos to the options available in the Batiste range. I was interested to learn that Batiste Dry Shampoo is the best selling dry shampoo in the UK, with a can sold every 2 seconds. That’s quite a feat, given how saturated the market is with this particular type of product. But, I believe if you have a product that lives up to it’s claims and is easy on the eye and pocket, you’ve got a winner.
Batiste dry shampoos are specifically formulated to banish oily roots and revitalize dull, lifeless hair. The formula contains a unique rice starch that absorbs grease, without leaving any residue on the hair.
My favourite variant in the range is the Dark & Deep Brown, as it contains a hint of brown colour that helps blend in root growth and any grey hairs. I spray it onto my roots; massage the product in using my fingertips, then brush out. Now, because I colour my hair every 4-6 weeks, I try go as long as I can between washes to preserve my colours intensity – usually 3 days. However, when I exercise (daily), I tend to sweat around my hairline. I spray this onto the area once it’s dried, massage it in and voila, fresh smelling, clean hair.
The Batiste Strength & Shine variant is also fast becoming a favourite. It’s enriched with L-Arginine – an amino acid known to strengthen the hair’s structure. It not only refreshes the hair, but also helps it look and feel stronger and healthier. It is excellent for those with fine and limp hair that gets oily very quickly.
I also LOVE that all the Batiste dry shampoos are available in a mini 50ml that sells for a very reasonable R39.99. I have three of the Batiste Floral & Fruity Blush minis; one for my handbag, one for my travel bag and one for just in case.

- A dry shampoo is NOT a substitute for a wash with shampoo.
I’ve done some online research on whether you can use dry shampoos on wigs and weaves, and it seems you can. In fact, Batiste was recommended on quite a few sites. Have any of you ever tried it on your weave or wig? I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts.
The Batiste range consists of 8 variants in the original range, namely: Original Dry Shampoo, Tropical, Blush and Fresh Cherry. The 200ml retails for R69.99 each. All are also available in the smaller 50ml and retail for R39.99 each.
