Late last December, I squeezed in an overnight stay at Val du Charron that turned out to be far more memorable than I could have imagined. Even though it was just for one night, I was genuinely excited to experience this working wine farm and hotel, and from the moment I arrived, it felt like the perfect way to close off a year of travel close to home.

Val du Charron Wine & Leisure Estate is set in the heart of the Cape winelands, just outside the charming town of Wellington and under an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Surrounded by dramatic mountain views, the estate immediately makes you exhale and slow down. There’s a wonderful sense of space here, paired with warm, friendly staff, excellent food, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Guests can enjoy wine tastings, explore hiking and biking trails, or simply soak up the scenery with a glass of wine in hand. It’s the kind of place that invites you to linger.

After a quick luggage drop on arrival, we headed straight to Pizza Vista, the estate’s Italian pizzeria housed in the historic cellar. It’s an atmospheric spot and, in my opinion, the ideal place for a casual yet memorable meal.

I shared lunch with a friend, and we settled on a prosciutto, mushroom and caramelised onion pizza that was absolutely delicious—thin, flavourful, and perfectly balanced.

We also ordered a generously sized halloumi salad, which we shared while admiring the sweeping mountain views. Paired with a glass of Val du Charron’s award-winning wine, it was the perfect way to ease into the stay.

Accommodation at Val du Charron is both luxurious and welcoming, with 40 family-friendly rooms arranged around a striking central pool and the Boma Bar.

For those seeking something extra special, the estate offers two five-star options: the exclusive Coach House, featuring three spacious suites each with a private patio and plunge pool, and the beautifully restored Manor House. Dating back to 1699, the Manor House has been completely revamped and offers one of the most distinctive stays in the Wellington winelands—ideal for honeymooners or families wanting something truly unique.

My room was newly renovated and impressively spacious, wonderfully quiet, and opened onto a balcony with a lovely view. It felt so fresh and untouched that I’m convinced I may have been the very first guest to stay in it post-renovation. I even spotted a tiny screw in the bathroom—hardly an issue, and if anything, it added to the charm.

There was something oddly delightful about knowing I was the first to use the sparkling new shower and bathroom. Little moments like that made the stay feel personal and special.

Dinner was served at The Grillroom, and it was a highlight of the visit. This is very much a carnivore’s paradise, specialising in grain- and grass-fed aged meats, while also offering seafood, poultry, and well-thought-out vegetarian options. The menu ranges from A-grade beef to bobotie and game, ensuring there’s something for every palate.

Recently revamped, the space is warm and inviting, with plush sofas in rich browns and vibrant greens, cosy fireplaces, and expansive glass doors that open onto a cantilevered deck seemingly floating above vineyards and mountains. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy a beautifully prepared meal alongside a glass of the estate’s wine.

One of the major highlights of Val du Charron is its wine tastings and cellar tours—sadly something I didn’t manage to fit in due to time constraints. The estate has, after all, won the prestigious Drinks International Most Innovative Approach Wine Tourism award, which says a lot about the experience on offer. It’s certainly a good reason for me to return.

The name Val du Charron, meaning “Valley of the Wagonmakers” in French, is steeped in history. Early French Huguenot settlers named the Wellington valley in reference to its role as the last stop for wagon repairs before travellers crossed the Bainskloof Pass into the interior. The name pays tribute to both French heritage and the vital wagon-making trade that once supported generations of explorers and traders. Knowing this history adds another layer of depth to a stay here—cheers to that.

Val du Charron seamlessly blends rich heritage, natural beauty, and modern comforts to create not only excellent wines, but a genuinely memorable guest experience. And perhaps one of its greatest luxuries of all? It’s so close to Cape Town, making it an easy and rewarding escape whenever the urge strikes.

Val du Charron is also a proud member of Cape Country Routes (CCR) South Africa, a curated collection of over 20 privately owned hotels, lodges, and guest houses located along scenic and historic routes in the Western and Eastern Cape. Each is selected for its character, charm, and sense of romance.
