There are few places in Cape Town that manage to feel both beautifully polished and wonderfully welcoming, but Labotessa Boutique Hotel has mastered that balance with quiet confidence. Tucked into the historic charm of Church Square, this intimate hotel offers a sense of calm that’s rare in the heart of the city. Its interiors are chic, its service thoughtful without ever feeling hurried, and its food celebrates simple pleasures done exceptionally well.

The Café and Terrace at Labotessa is, without question, one of the city’s most refined daytime spots. It’s the kind of place where bright, sunlit mornings naturally stretch into leisurely lunches, and long lunches gently dissolve into late-afternoon glasses of wine—or a celebratory splash of bubbles. There’s an effortless rhythm here, shaped by the surrounding cobblestones, leafy trees, and the everyday bustle of the square.

I was invited to enjoy a summer lunch on the terrace recently, and it reminded me exactly why I adore this space.

The menu is fresh and confident, with dishes that allow quality ingredients to shine.

The smoked salmon trout with citrus and fennel salad was a standout for me—cool, aromatic, and beautifully balanced, the sort of plate that feels tailor-made for warm Cape Town afternoons when the sunlight lingers a little longer.

The burrata salad, paired with heirloom tomatoes and basil, is another summer-perfect choice. It practically belongs outdoors, its colours and flavours singing in harmony with the easy breeziness of terrace dining.

For something heartier, the broodje pittige kip—a Dutch-style spicy chicken sandwich with harissa—is ideal for those popping in between meetings or cultural wanderings through the city’s galleries and museums.

And then there’s the dessert that Labotessa has become quietly famous for: the signature appeltaart. This fragrant Dutch apple pie, made from a treasured family recipe, arrives with an irresistibly velvety whipped cream. It’s comforting, nostalgic and elegant all at once—very much a reflection of Labotessa’s overall philosophy. Here, personal touches matter, and every detail feels considered.

To complement the summer menu, the Café offers a curated list of seasonal wines, an impressive selection of the Cape’s finest Méthode Cap Classique, and a cocktail menu that leans into freshness. The Garden Terrace cocktail blends elderflower, mint and cucumber into a cool, aromatic sip—practically summer in a glass.

The Paloma, bright with grapefruit and lime, is equally refreshing and perfectly suited to warm evenings when the terrace becomes a natural gathering point for after-work drinks. It’s my absolute favourite!

Just a few steps inside, the Diptyque Boutique invites you into a world of sensory calm. Here, the Diptyque Tea Experience—served daily at 11h00 and 14h00—offers a refined journey through the French maison’s most iconic fragrances, thoughtfully paired with delicate bites and signature teas. With intentionally limited seating, booking is essential, but the reward is an intimate, immersive encounter unlike anything else in the city.
