Last weekend, my bestie and I escaped the city for a much-needed girls’ getaway to Angala, a boutique hotel nestled between the majestic mountains of Paarl and Franschhoek. I’d heard whispers of how utterly divine this “barefoot 5-star sanctuary was,” and let me tell you—it more than lived up to its dreamy reputation.

Angala is one of those rare places where luxury and nature live in perfect harmony.

The setting is utterly serene, and every detail has been thoughtfully considered by the family who owns and manages the hotel. Their passion is evident—from the design of the rooms to the nourishing food and peaceful gardens.

We arrived at Angala on a surprisingly warm winter Friday, with the sun high in the sky and the promise of a blissful weekend ahead.

We stayed in one of the luxury rooms, and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. Our space had a private garden, an outdoor shower, and views of rolling vineyards and mountains that looked almost too perfect to be real.

Inside, we had a super king-size bed, a cosy fireplace, and a beautifully curated space that felt homely yet elegant. You can tell that each room has been decorated with love.

Although it was mid-winter here in Cape Town, South Africa; Saturday delivered a balmy 26 degrees, and we did something I never thought I’d do in July—SWIM!

Yes, we lounged by the eco pool, soaking up the sun before dipping into its crystal-clear waters.

There’s something magical about swimming in a natural, chemical-free pool, surrounded by dragonflies, birdsong, and blooming aquatic plants.

When we weren’t basking in the sun or lounging on our patio, we were enjoying the impressive infrared sauna and steam room, while taking occasional dips in the ozonated heated plunge pool – perfect for soaking your stress away.

If you’re in the mood for a massage or even a private yoga session, they’ll gladly arrange it in the comfort of your room. It really is a wellness haven where you’re encouraged to slow down, unplug, and reconnect—with yourself, nature, and your bestie.

We indulged in some seriously great meals at Angala’s in-house restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The focus is on wholesome, local produce, and they are incredibly accommodating of dietary requirements. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free or just a bit fussy (like me!), the staff make sure you feel looked after.

A special mention must go to Angala’s magnificent herb, fruit, and vegetable garden -masterfully designed by the internationally celebrated Leon Kluge. Having recently won accolades at the renowned Chelsea Flower Show in the UK, Leon has created a lush oasis that marries natural beauty with sustainable living. It’s a space to breathe, to feel deeply connected to nature, and to witness firsthand how art and ecology can unite.

Although its wonderfully secluded, Angala is also perfectly located for exploring the Winelands. Within 5km, you’ll find some of South Africa’s top wine farms, and both Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are just a short drive away if you’re keen on boutique shopping or fine dining. But honestly? We barely left. Once you arrive, Angala just wraps you up in calm and convinces you to stay put.

A highlight for me was the birdsong that echoed through the gardens—apparently, over 40 species of birds visit the property thanks to their indigenous landscaping and eco-conscious water recycling. It adds another layer of peace to an already tranquil setting.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat, a girls’ weekend like ours, or a base to explore the best of the Cape Winelands, Angala is a sanctuary worth discovering. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a place to breathe, rest, and truly unwind.
