I recently spent a delightful 24 hours playing tourist in my home city, Cape Town, and it reminded me just how much the Mother City has to offer, whether you’re a resident or a visitor. Here’s how to make the most of 24 hours in this awesome destination.

Morning: Kayaking Adventure

Start your day with an exhilarating kayaking experience with Cape Country Routes Activity Gravity Adventures who offer unique and diverse adventures suitable for a wide range of ages and skills.

We launched from Three Anchor Bay, paddling past Mouille Point to Granger Bay and back. The weather was simply perfect—sunny with a gentle breeze.

Although we didn’t spot any dolphins – they often frolic in these waters – it a thrilling adventure, nonetheless. Kayaking offers a unique perspective of Cape Town, with breathtaking views of the coastline from the Atlantic Ocean.

Afternoon: Luxurious Stay at Hippo Boutique Hotel

After our morning on the water, we checked into Cape Country Routes charming Hippo Boutique Hotel in the trendy Gardens suburb.

My double-volume, Hippo themed Executive apartment featured a kitchenette, lounge and work desk on one level with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs.

Reminders of the Hippo theme were dotted throughout my apartment. My favourite was this photograph that has pride of place in the lounge.

We were gifted the cutest hippo key ring (below) made by artist Andrew Dombuleni. Many of his superb wire and bead masterpieces are dotted around the hotel and are available for purchase. Dombuleni is renowned for creating interesting works of art using recycled materials.

The hotel offers various room types and amenities like a lovely swimming pool and 24-hour reception for airport transfers and in-room spa treatments.

Its prime location makes it easy to explore attractions like the Bo-Kaap and Table Mountain, along with vibrant cafes and cultural hubs nearby.

Picnic in The Company’s Garden

For lunch, we strolled to The Company’s Garden, just a ten-minute walk from the hotel.

Established in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company, this historic garden is a beautiful green space in the city center, rich in flora and fauna. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic and offers a peaceful escape amid the urban hustle.

Special thanks to the Hippo Hotel for going above and beyond to organise the most delicious eats from the Lebanese Bakery.

Evening: Dinner at Mama Africa

As the sun set, we headed to Mama Africa on Long Street for a traditional African feast.

This iconic restaurant, celebrating South Africa’s new democracy since 1995, is renowned for its hearty, authentic dishes.

I opted for the Tasting Menu, sampling eight dishes from across the continent.

I loved the vibrant, in-house band that played a mix of traditional and modern tunes and the free face painting on offer added to the atmosphere, making it a night to remember.

The Next Morning: Breakfast and Table Mountain

The following morning began with a healthy breakfast at Therapy Restaurant, conveniently located next to the hotel.

After fueling up, it was time to conquer one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World: Table Mountain.

Standing at 1,086 meters, it boasts over 1,400 unique plant species and the MOST glorious views of Cape Town.

While several hiking routes are available, the easiest—and most spectacular—way to the top is via the state-of-the-art rotating cable car. This year marks the cableways 95th birthday – what a milestone! To avoid long queues, consider booking your tickets in advance HERE. Remember to pack sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket, as the weather can change rapidly.

When to Visit Cape Town

There’s no single best time to explore Cape Town; each season has its charm. Peak season runs from December to February, featuring hot summer weather. However, I believe March and April are ideal, with warm, wind-free days and fewer tourists. From May to September, although it mostly rains, this time is perfect for enjoying the city’s world-class eateries and nearby Winelands.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Cape Town is brimming with activities and experiences. Don’t wait—plan your adventure in this beautiful city today!
