I do love hats but tend to wear them more during the cooler months. This is something I’m changing, given that hats not only up the style ante, they also protect the scalp and skin from damaging UV rays.
Here’s a selection of some of my current favourite styles of hats from Superbalist.
STRAW HAT
Any hat made of straw falls into this category, but it’s worth a mention because straw hats are A THING for summer. Style-wise, it can include everything from a Panama style or floppy style.
I love this one from Superbalist R260 (BUY) which has an extra-wide brim for sun protection and a pretty ribbon detail.
BUCKET HAT
This style gets its name because it is often shaped like a bucket. Typically, a bucket hat style will have a wide, downward-sloping brim. Bucket hats come in a variety of colours and patterns, but I would suggest one in a solid colour as it will work with more styles.
The khaki green colour of this bucket hat R249 (BUY) will work with most colour combinations.
FEDORA HAT
A Fedora style is recognizable by its soft brim and indented crown. This style is creased lengthways down the crown and “pinched” near the front on both sides.
I’m besotted with this grey Fedora style that can be worn all year round, R349 (BUY) I just love its chic vibe and grey colour.
BRETON HAT
Just like the Breton striped top, this hat style also originates from Brittany in France and was worn by fisherman. The Breton can be worn tilted, or straight on top of the head and is recognizable by its brim that curls up.
This Breton style R249 (BUY) is so very French with its black bow detail and, best of all, it’s a local, proudly South African brand.
SUN HAT
A sun hat can refer to any hat that protects you from harmful UV rays. It usually has a very wide brim and sometimes features string or ribbon to keep it secure.
I love a bit of animal print, so this sun hat with its bold leopard pattern, R299 (BUY) really speaks to me. I also like that it has a string attached to ensure the hat doesn’t blow away on windy days.
I’m astounded at how few women these day embrace hat wearing. Also – and let’s be honest – there’s nothing quite like a gorgeous hat to hide a bad hair day!
What’s your go-to style of hat for summer or winter?

While i’m an animal print girl, that big blue hat is just the one and trumps even the leopard ranger hat. Love it!
