This past Friday I celebrated Spring Day with Veldskoen, one of my favourite local footwear brands.
The brand held an event to celebrate the new Namaqualand sandals – the brands first range designed exclusively for women.
Did you know?
The word “Veldskoen”, was first documented by the Dutch settlers who arrived in Southern Africa almost 400 years ago. It means “field shoes.” However, according to Khoisan tribal folklore, there were leather shoes, cut from a single hide, being made and worn by the tribe, as far back as 1000 years before that.
The Beginning of the Veldskoen Brand
After watching the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Nick Dreyer and Ross Zondagh were fairly unimpressed with the South African kit. They began imagining what the athletes could have been wearing that would have better represented South Africa. Zondagh suggested a pair of leather Veldskoen, because they are iconic South African shoes. Dreyer responded that most Veldskoen weren’t exactly fashionable. And so, they began chatting about ways to make the shoe more attractive. The answer came in the form of the brightly coloured soles and laces; Veldskoen’s trademark look today.
Since the inception of the brand in 2016, Veldskoen has expanded into a global brand and now have distribution partners one very continent.
Now back to the fabulous Namaqualand launch.
The venue was an exquisite revamped farmhouse called Ivydene situated in Rondebosch. The event was held in the garden which had been transformed with plush velvet couches, gorgeous rigs and beautiful tables.
An explosion of beautiful, bright blooms.
The flowers were used to create flower crowns, perfect to celebrate Spring Day!
Nail technicians were on hand to adorn our nails with pretty daisy art.
Delish snacks
As mentioned, we were invited to this event to celebrate the launch of the Namaqualand ladies sandals, which are available in two colourways.
Aloe (olive)
Daisy (tan)
The Namaqualand retails for R899 (BUY)
All material used to create the Veldskoen styles are sustainably sourced. The sandals are made in South Africa using breathable, hydrophobic (repels water) leather.
Each is hand-stitched with extreme care and attention to detail. The result is a super comfortable and durable shoe.
I opted for the Aloe (olive) colour and cannot believe how comfortable, let alone stylish they are.
Thanks for a lovely Spring Day Veldskoen. I had so much fun.
I’m all about supporting local brands who produce incredible merchandise, amidst all the challenges. I hope to encourage you, all my wonderful readers, to do the same.
