I love the Converse brand. The iconic “Chuck Taylors” or “Converse All Stars” are hands-down my favourite style of sneakers. Whether hi or lo tops, I love the cool edginess and gritty street cred they lend to any look.

Did you know, the ‘Converse Rubber Shoe Company’ was started in 1908 in Massachusetts? They specialized in rubber soled footwear known as galoshes on a seasonal basis. By 1910, to keep their workforce employed year-round, they started making athletic shoes. With the popularity of basketball on the rise, Converse began developing a shoe people could wear while playing the game. In 1917, the very first version on the Converse All Star was released.

At the time, Charles “Chuck” Taylor was a semi professional basketball player and manager of the Converse All Stars Basketball team in the mid 1920’s. By 1921, Taylor became a salesman for Converse, and, because of his background in basketball, identified ways to improve the re-design of the “All Star” basketball sneaker. The redesigned sneaker included the now iconic star-shaped logo on the patch, with Taylor’s signature on either side. And so, the Chuck Taylor All Stars were born.

The original design of the Converse All Star has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1920’s. While the sneaker style is no longer associated with professional baseball, the brand continues to flourish in popular culture and fashion, and has reached a cool, cult status.

Because we all need a pair of red sneakers! I had a pair of red lo tops back when I was pregnant with my daughter that I wore almost daily. I had to buy them two sizes bigger (pregnancy swell). Once my daughter was born (& my feet returned to their normal size), I sadly had to give them away.
