Even if you’re not spending the day in the sun, you should be applying a facial sunscreen daily. In fact, it’s THE most important skincare product to prevent premature ageing – given that 80% of wrinkles are caused by UV rays.
Always apply your sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors so it has a chance to absorb into the skin and offer optimal protection. If you’re spending the day outdoors, ensure you re-apply every two hours or after swimming.
For the face, apply 1/4 teaspoons worth of sunscreen daily, more if you’re spending the day outdoors.
Sunscreen can and should be used on babies from 6 months if they are spending time outdoors.
Best Anti-Ageing Formula
The Heliocare 360 Age Active Fluid, R612.38 (BUY) is a great option to protect the skin from the visible signs of ageing. The Heliocare 360 Age Active Fluid contains high-level broad-spectrum protection plus a tripe anti-ageing complex. There’s Hyaluronic Acid to plump and moisturise, Serine – an amino acid that promotes cell renewal and Trehalose that acts as a cellular protector, reducing oxidative stress. Together, these ingredients plump the skin and smooth fine lines, while an additional ‘soft focus’ complex diffuses light, reducing the appearance of fine lines. As with all Heliocare sunscreens, this formula contains Fernblock+ that protects against four types of radiation (UVA, UVB, Visible light & Infrared) and offers antioxidant protection. The silky fluid has a subtle tint, melting into the complexion on application while evening the complexion. It can be used on all skin types and will not irritate the eyes.
Best to Prevent Hyperpigmentation
Skin discolouration does happen with age, but also because of prolonged and repeated exposure to UV rays. It results in a lackluster and dull complexion. The Esthederm Photo Reverse Anti-Dark Brightening Protective Treatment Light Beige Tint – Very High Protection R952 (BUY) is a brilliant choice for very fair and fair complexions because it evens out the complexion and conceals, prevents and corrects dark spots even when exposed to UV rays and blue light. In addition to providing very high protection against photoageing, it also protects the skin from sunburn.
A ‘Photoreverse’ patent acts at different cellular levels to regulate the pigmentation process despite sun exposure.
The formula contains a ‘Global Cellular Protection’ technology that neutralizes free radicals, protects cellular DNA and helps fight against collagen degradation. It also contains the Esthederm ‘Cellular Water’ patent which reproduces the qualities of water naturally contained in the skin.
Best for Oily/Blemish Prone Skin
Eucerin Sun Gel-Cream Oil Control SPF 50+ R299.95 (BUY) is a great, everyday sunscreen for oil and acne prone skin. Sebum-regulating Oil Control technology with L-Carnitine and absorbing micro-particles leave skin with an immediate dry touch, while preventing shine for up to eight hours.
The formula combines photostable UVA and UVB filters for very high protection. LicochalconeA works to neutralize free radicals caused by UV, while Glycyrrhetinic Acid supports the skin’s own DNA repair mechanisms.
The formula is fragrance free and has a ultra-light, non-greasy texture and is very well tolerated on sensitive skin.
Best for Blue Light Protection
Did you know that large quantities of blue-violet rays are present in daylight, especially when the sky is clear, and they penetrate even more deeply into the skin’s layers than UV rays?
These rays, charged with energy, cause oxidative stress and, alone, alter cells even in the first hour of exposure.
In fact, 25% of cell damage is caused by blue light. Daily, these rays accelerate skin ageing and speed up the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots.
The newly launched Eau Thermale Avène Intense Protect SPF50+ R295 (BUY) formula contains the TriAbsorB filter – the first ultra-broad-spectrum filter for short UVA-UVB rays, long UVA rays and blue light up to 450nm. The filter works to reinforce skin’s protection from photoaging caused by blue light and offers the highest level of protection from deep and visible skin damage.
Three made-to-measure formulas are available for every skin type: Dry to Very Dry, Normal to combination and Oily, blemish prone skin.
Best Mineral Formula
The Skin Functional Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 R580 (BUY) is great for all skintypes and those seeking a mineral formula. It’s also made by one of my favourite local skincare brands. The formula is fragrance free and does not leave a white cast and contains Squalene to moisturise the skin, Aloe to soothe and Bisadolol that provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Apple fruit extract moisturises and soothes while also gently exfoliating and brightening the skin.
Zinc oxide works to reduce blotchiness and any uneven skintone. The formula protects the skin from UVA, UVB and blue light with its broad-spectrum SPF 50.
Best for Normal to Dry Skin (& Sensitive Eyes)
The Nivea Sun Anti-Age Q10 SPF 50 R159.99 (BUY) is my NUMBER ONE budget recommendations and every time I chat about it, I get so many messages telling me how much you all love it.
The formula contains antioxidants that protect the DNA damage, while Q10 prevents the appearance of sun-induced fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. The formula is super hydrating and leaves the skin with a light and silky-smooth feeling. If you, like me, have super sensitive eyes, I can assure you this formula will not irritate them. Best of all, this is such an affordable option.
Best for Sensitive Skin
The Eau Thermale Avène Intense Protect SPF 50+ R360 (BUY) can be used on even the most sensitive skin – including babies, children and adults. It is suitable for both face & body. The formula contains a unique Trisorb filter system that offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA, UVB and invisible blue light. It also protects against DNA damage. It absorbs in 3 seconds (I’m not even kidding) and nourishes the skin for 8 hours. It has a slight nude colour, but once applied, this is neutralized to a transparent finish. This formula is 100% photostable, fragrance free, water and sweat resistant (not waterproof – so it needs to be applied after swimming and / or excessive seating). It also carries the ‘Skin Protect Ocean Respect’ stamp of approval, meaning it’s not harmful to the marine environment.
