Retinol is renowned for being the gold standard of anti-ageing ingredients. For good reason too, because it works to exfoliate the skin, increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production and synthesis. It reduces lines and wrinkles and can even help fade dark spots.
I’m no stranger to Retinol, have been using it for years, and often include it in my skincare regime.
The clinical trial results are pretty impressive:
Noticeable results after 1 week
89% saw deep wrinkles reduced after 4 weeks
+32% increase in skin firmness after 4 weeks
I’ve been using the product for a month now. This is what I’ve noticed in my skin:
My skin appeared brighter and smoother after about 4 days of use (I use the product every evening as my skin is used to Retinol)
While I don’t have deep wrinkles, those around my eyes did show improvement
Again, I think for my age (47 yrs.), my skin is pretty firm and I did notice a slight improvement.
The Skin Republic Pure Retinol 0.2% Serum is a great choice for someone concerned with the signs of ageing, new to Retinol, and looking for a well formulated variant that is cost effective. It can be used on all skin types but be cautious if you have very sensitive skin.
Retinol is a very effective and active ingredient. If you’re using Retinol for the first time, I strongly recommend doing a patch test to check for potential skin reactions.
Apply a small amount of product on the inside of your forearm.
Keep the area dry and leave the product on from 24 hours.
After 24 hours rinse the area. If you notice any irritation, itching, redness, swelling or any other negative reactions do not use the product.
If you’re new to Retinol, your skin needs to acclimate as Retinol is a very active ingredient.
This is done by using the Pure Retinol 0.2% Serum every second or third evening.
If, like me, your skin is used to Retinol, you can use this serum nightly.
Using Retinol With Other Serums / Ingredients
Retinol works well with certain ingredients like Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid (I always combine Retinol with HA, applying it after the Retinol).
Do NOT use Retinol at the same time as these ingredients: Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. You can, however, alternate your Retinol with these ingredients – just don’t use them on the same evening.
Can you layer serums?
Yes, you can layer up to two serums at the same time. Always layer by consistency. Apply the lightest serum first and the thickest (richest) last. There is no need to wait for the serum to absorb before applying the next.
Tip: Apply thicker serums on slightly damp skin (this aid with absorption).
IMPORTANT: Use a sunscreen during the day when using retinol because it can sensitize the skin to sun.
Along with the Pure Retinol 0.2% Serum, I was also sent the Skin Republic Retinol Hydrogel Under Eye Patch (R68,95) – BUY and the Retinol Infusion Biodegradable Sheet Mask (R75,95) BUY.
