I do love a good gin – even better if it’s a locally made craft Gin! And, given all the alcohol bans, it’s now more important than ever to support these small businesses.

So, I got very excited when Still-Oaky Distillery – a boutique craft distillery owned and managed by husband and wife team Fanie and Annerie Smit – reached out and asked me if I’d like to try a few of their Gin options. The brands small, contemporary range is the result of the analytics of a software programmer and creativeness of a chef.

The idea for Still-Oaky was kindled on the slopes of the Magaliesberg and materialized in the Mother City, with a small distillery based in Strand.

Being one of only 15% of the worlds’ Gin producers who produce their own base alcohol enables Still-Oaky to bring you a true craft product. They are hands-on in the entire process of fermenting their own alcohol from Apple, distilling, bottling and packaging their authentic Craft Gins with custom-made equipment.

I was lucky enough to sample 3 of their delicious Gin variants:

Still-Oaky Searsia London Dry Gin R370 (BUY)

This Gin is fermented and distilled from an apple base with a special blend of African, Indian and European botanicals. Because the gin is produced from apples, any fruit garnish is amplified by the natural flavour.

Enjoy it with Indian Tonic a slice of fresh orange and Granny Smith apple.

Still-Oaky Roasted Rooibos R370 (BUY)

The Rooibos used in this Gin is sourced from the Piketberg region and dark roasted prior to infusing it into this Gin. It’s a first of its kind with a very unique note of veld fire smoke, complimented by the fresh forest scent of Rooibos Fynbos. I love it because it’s a true South African flavour.

Enjoy this gin with grapefruit tonic or Fitch & Leedes new Blue Tonic and garnish a slice of fresh orange or grapefruit, fresh thyme or mint.

Still-Oaky Aardvark Gin R375 (BUY)

This classic London Gin that is locally distilled with a globally foraged botanical blend. Aardvark is best paired with pink or regular tonic and garnished with slices of cucumber, fresh oreganum and freshly ground black pepper.

Very excitingly, Still-Oaky will be launching their Gin bar at Dutch Haven Bistro in Durbanville (Highstreet) on 3 September 2021. Click HERE for more info.
