I love bags and have quite a collection that spans brands from Louis Vuitton to Marc Jacobs to Missibabab. But designer bags are just so expensive and very few people can afford them. The older I get, the more I think this obsession with international, big brand designer bags is outdated and driven by unconscious consumerism.
A few years back, I made the decision that if I was going to buy ANOTHER bag, it would be from a local brand.
And we have some SUPERB local bag brands here in South Africa!
My latest bag (pictured below) is from Ilundi and I am so smitten with it, I just had to share its beauty and introduce you to the brand if you aren’t already aware of it.
Ilundi’s makes some of the most beautiful genuine leather bags and accessories. Minimal geometric lines and quality natural materials result in a range exuding understated luxury and sophistication. Influenced by minimalist Japanese aesthetic principles and clean-cut Scandinavian designs, their products are stripped down to their essential qualities to achieve simplicity. Pieces are produced with artisanal proficiency – hand cut, hand stitched, hand woven originals.
An Ilundi bag can take up to 14 hours to make by hand! Every hole is hand punched and every stitch hand sewn. No sewing machines are used. Ilundi prefers to do things with their hands, which is the hard way, but also the best way. They sew their products with the reliable saddle stitch – one of the oldest stitches used in leather work. It is much stronger than the lock stitch used in sewing machines. They use waxed thread for extra durability and added wear protection.
MY NEXT PURCHASE!
Ilundi use the finest full grain vegetable tanned cowhide sourced from tanneries within South Africa. Vegetable tanning allows the leather to continue to absorb water and oils throughout its lifetime, developing a rich dark patina with use. Ilundi bags improve with age (as all good quality leather bags do).
Meet my hand painted Ilundi Signature Sling Bag R750 – BUY
This beauty of a bag is hand crafted using locally sourced vegetable tanned cow hide and antique brass hardware and is folded without any stitching. It has a buckle closure, and an adjustable shoulder strap with a buckle.
Please take a look at how beautifully this bag is constructed.
What makes it so wonderfully unique, is that it’s hand painted in Cape Town (using a specially formulated leather paint) and embossed with the artists name and date it was painted. Obviously because the pattern is hand painted, one needs to understand that there will be slight variations from product to product.
The Dimensions of the bag are: Height: 14cm x Width: 19cm x Depth: 7cm
Have a look at the Ilundi website HERE – they are having a sale on some of their styles and if you’re looking for a beautiful leather tote bag, they have this MAGNIFICENT style on sale (also available in black & many other colours)
