I believe there comes a time in every woman’s life – usually during her mid-twenties or early thirties – when skin discolouration becomes an issue. After all, this is one of the first signs of ageing.

I’m now in my forties and yes, while I do have wrinkles, it’s my skin discolouration that’s really concerning. I now know this because I didn’t protect my skin with daily sunscreen application in my youth. Sadly, as you get older, the ravages of sun exposure become evident on the skin and it’s worth remembering that sun damage is cumulative – meaning it just gets worse over time. Wear a good sunscreen EVERYDAY, no matter what the season. I love this one HERE by Neostrata.

Thankfully there are certain ingredients in skincare that REALLY do brighten the skin and help with the appearance of discolouration – Vitamin C being top of the list. Couple this with Retinol – the gold standard of anti-ageing ingredients; throw in Niacinamide, which helps restore cellular energy and repair damaged DNA, and add the antioxidant Curcumin (found in Turmeric). Then there’s the skin wonder worker Neoglucosamine that plumps fine lines & wrinkles, alleviates discolouration, evens skin tone AND promotes skin firming. These ingredients make for a potent skin illuminating cocktail with benefits.

The NeoStrata Enlighten range contains all the above ingredients and works to target skin discolouration issues. It can be used on normal, oily and dry skin types.

Over the past month, I tested the four products below from the range:

NeoStrata Enlighten Ultra Brightening Cleanser R601 – BUY

Gentle, non-drying and exfoliating, this cream wash not only removes makeup, dirt & oils, it also brightens dull, lackluster skin. You only need a small amount of this pearlescent cleanser that develops into a plush foam and deep cleans the skin. It’s the NeoGlucosamine that provides a gentle exfoliating action on the skin’s surface to target dark spots that can make skin appear uneven & dull. Use it twice daily – morning & evening. And like I said, you need only the smallest amount.

NeoStrata Enlighten Illuminating Serum R1170 – BUY

A serum is SO important to address a specific skin concern because they are formulated to penetrate deep into the skin’s layers. This multi-action one targets discolouration & uneven skin tone with 4% Niacinamide and a blend of Vitamin C, B-Resorcinol (soothes any skin irritations) and Licorice extract. There’s also NeoGlucosamine to gently exfoliate and fade existing skin discolouration. This serum is not fragranced, but because of the addition on Vitamin C has a lovely citrussy scent (that disappears within seconds of application). I find it quite lovely.

Use this serum twice a day (morning & evening) on clean skin. I find two pumps are more than enough for my face, neck & décolletage (I have the WORST sun damage in this area). After applying the serum, wait a minute or two for it to fully absorb into the skin. You’ll know when it’s fully absorbed as your skin won’t feel tacky (slightly sticky). It’s also VERY IMPORTANT when using ANY brightening range to LIMIT sun exposure during and after to prevent the darkening from reoccurring.

NeoStrata Enlighten Pigment Controller R1002 – BUY

This is an intensive brightening concentrate that contains Retinol (0.1%) and stabilized Vitamin C to target pigment at its source, enhancing skin resurfacing and diminishing the appearance of discoloration. It helps to brighten skin quickly, thanks to the antioxidant found in Turmeric that targets the look of dark spots. It brightens the skin, giving it more clarity and luminosity. It’s BRILLIANT for uneven pigmentation! I use this after applying my serum both morning & evening. Because this product contains Retinol, it important for your skin to acclimate (get used to it). This is done by only using the product in the evening for two weeks. Thereafter, you can use it twice daily (morning & evening). Again, it’s important to limit sun exposure when using brightening products, especially those containing Retinol!

NeoStrata Enlighten Brightening Eye Cream R780 – BUY

OMG I’ve found an eye cream that actually does diminish dark circles while hydrating the delicate eye area! This beauty gives the eyes a restored look of firmness & moisture for a smooth, bright appearance. The formula contains antioxidants, peptides and algae extract that targets dark under eye circles. An anti-ageing blend of Gluconolactone plus Bionic Acid targets the skin’s natural hydrating matrix to brighten the appearance of dark circles. This formula is fragrance-free, and ophthalmologist tested. Use it twice daily (morning & evening) and apply around the whole eye area, including the upper lids.

Here is a before pic taken just prior to starting the Neostrata Enlighten range. Note the discolouration on the top of both my cheeks as well as my slightly enlarged pores.

After 4 weeks of use, you can see a very visible improvement in my skin discolouration, especially on the sides of my cheeks. I also noticed that after about two weeks of using these products, my pores seemed smaller & less visible. My skin also has a wonderful, radiant glow.

You can purchase NeoStrata products online at DermaStore or Skin Miles and from selected Aesthetic Medical Practitioners and medi-spas nationwide.

I’m 36 and really struggling to get rid of pigmentation left by my last pregnancy. I tried a few brightening ranges, but because my skin is so sensitive, I had a reaction. Can this be used on sensitive skin?

I love Neostrata products and find they work really well. I’ve used the Correct Retinol Night serum last year and saw good results in my skins texture. I’m very interested to try this because I’m struggling with pigmentation, but can only afford one product. Which one out of the serum & Pigment controller would you recommend ?

Hi Cookie. Are you are aware the prices on the website links are lower than the ones given on your article? Not complaining (in fact I’m thrilled), just wanted to flag for you 🙂

Hi Jen, one has to be cautious with very active ingredients when you have very sensitive skin. Ingredients like Retinol & Vitamin C can be cause a reaction. Let me chat to the brand manager and see, but my gut feeling is this range may be a bit too active for you skin. Will get back to you ASAP.

Hi Lauren, I’d go with the serum. It’s a great product that is very active and a little goes a long way.

Hi Cooks. Yes, I know. My prices are the RSP’s (recommended selling prices) given to me by the PR person. The online stores don’t have to sell at those exact prices – and often don’t, to make their offering more enticing.
