I believe there are still many women who are unsure as to how serums work and when they should be using one. Also, amazingly enough, I still get women asking me what the difference is between a serum & moisturiser.
A moisturiser works to replenish the moisture content in the skin either by trapping moisture in the uppermost layer of the skin or replenishing its water content.
Serums, on the other hand, are formulated to penetrate deep into the skin and address a particular skin concern like lines, wrinkles, lack of radiance, dark spots, pigmentation etc. The reason serums are generally expensive is because of the way they’re formulated and because they contain what we call active ingredients (work to treat a variety of skin conditions).
I always tell women to purchase a basic, preferably fragrance free moisturiser without an SPF that can be used both day & night, then to spend a little more on a treatment serum to address their specific skincare concern.
I was SO excited when I received the new SVR Laboratoire Ampoule range which consists of three various serums, each designed to address specific skin issues. Best of all, these brilliantly formulated serums only cost R725 each. But let me not get ahead of myself (can you tell I’m excited?)
Ampoule A (R725) – BUY
Now, you guys know how highly I regard Retinol. It really is the gold standard of anti-ageing ingredients – for good reason too. Retinol, also known as Vitamin A, works to re-texturize the skin and correct deep wrinkles. It’s one of the few ingredients that yields visible results in a short period of time.
This 0.3% Vitamin A Pure Retinol serum contains encapsulated Vitamin A that gradually releases into the different layers of the skin, guaranteeing optimal tolerance even for sensitive skin. The formula works to protect against oxidative stress (thereby protecting the skin from the signs of aging), unify the complexion, stimulate the production of collagen & elastin, help with imperfections & enlarged pores and diminish the look of fine lines & wrinkles.
How to Use:
Apply a few drops morning or evening before moisturising (I prefer using Retinol formulas at night), or, mix directly with your moisturiser then apply to skin. If you have sensitive skin, allow it to acclimate to the Retinol formula first. Start by applying a few drops every 3 days, then if well tolerated by your skin, every 2 days until finally you’re using it daily. If the formula tingles or makes the skin red, use every 3 days.
My skin is used to Retinol, so I use my Ampoule A every evening. First, I apply my Ampoule B3 to hydrate my skin, then I follow that up with Ampoule A. Because the Ampoule B3 is hydrating, I find sometimes I don’t even need to apply a moisturiser after.
Ampoule A can be used together with Ampoule B3, but not with Ampoule C.
Ampoule B (R725) – BUY
Is your skin dry or dehydrated (let’s be honest, we all have dehydrated skin, even those with oily skin)?
The Ampoule B3 contains high concentrations of Vitamin B3 that works to soothe and strengthen the skin. This formula will hydrate, plump and restore moisture reserves in the skin.
Also referred to as Niacinamide, Vitamin B3 works to strengthen & restore the skin’s barrier. This formula contains 3 Hyaluronic acids, each with different molecular weights (medium, high & very high) that restore the skin’s moisture reserves at different levels in the skin. What I love the most about this formula is how clean & minimal it is (making it a perfect choice for those with very sensitive skin types) containing only 12 ingredients and no fragrance. This is a serum that we should all be using!
How to Use it:
Apply a few drops to the skin morning or evening before moisturising or mix directly with your moisturiser.
You can use layer Ampoule B3 with the Ampoule A or C (apply the B3 first, then the other after) or use it alone.
Ampoule C (R725) – BUY
As you may have guessed, Ampoule C contains Vitamin C – 20% optimized Vitamin C, to be exact. Now, Vitamin C is not the easiest ingredient to formulate because, in its pure state, it can become unstable over time (through oxidization). This means it loses its properties and is no longer as effective as it once was. To maximize its effectiveness, an optimized form has been selected. While the optimized structure is similar to Vitamin C and offers the same properties, it’s far more stable, meaning it holds on to its effectiveness, thus, the formula lasts up to 9 months after opening. Okay, science lesson over (I do love the science of beauty, can you tell?).
When applied topically, Vitamin C recharges the skin’s batteries brightening tired, dull, uneven, acne-prone skin & wrinkles to almost immediately reveal a more radiant complexion. Vitamin C is brilliant to even out the skin tone and can even help tone the skin. It’s also a great antioxidant, so works to protect the skin from damage.
I’ve recommended Ampoule B3 to 5 people now – all of whom are raving about just how effective it is in giving the skin a radiant glow.
How to Use it:
I use mine during the day by either applying a few drops directly onto clean skin or mixing the drops with my day cream. I use formula during the day, because that is when my skin is under attack by free radicals (unstable molecules in our atmosphere that cause ageing & diseases) and UV. I’ll usually apply my Ampoule B3 first, then my C.
IMPORTANT: While you can layer Ampoule C with Ampoule B3, you shouldn’t layer it with Ampoule A because retinol & Vitamin C actually cancel each other out.
Why a good sunscreen is so important when you’ve invested money is a serum.
Did you know that 80% of skin ageing is due to sun exposure?
That’s why it is so important to protect our skin from damaging UV rays. And no, it’s NEVER TOO LATE to start protecting your skin!
Also, certain ingredients like Retinol & Vitamin C can make the skin sun sensitive and cause issues like skin discoloration so investing in a good sunscreen will only enhance the results of your serum.
I’m loving the SVR Sun Secure Blur (R260) – BUY which has an SPF of 50 and the most AMAZING mousse texture that blurs imperfections and acts as a BRILLIANT makeup base. It absorbs in an instant and doesn’t leave any trace of oiliness yet manages to be still be moisturising.
It is the ideal skin care ally for the Ampoule range.
You’ll also find SVR at selected dermatologists & salons. Find your closest stockiest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
