It’s no secret that Eucerin makes some of my favourite products from body lotions, to hand creams & facial serums. I’ve been featuring a few of my favourite’s over on Instagram & Facebook for the past month, and though I’d do a roundup post on all of them, explaining why I have so much love for them.
Eucerin UreaRepair Plus 5% Urea Hand Cream (R142.99 for 75ml)
As a beauty writer, I’ve tried my fair share of hand creams over the years. There are a few that have impressed, but the one I love the most & always recommend is the Eucerin Urea Repair Plus 5% Urea Hand Cream
What sets the formula apart from the others is that is manages to be ultra-nourishing without being greasy or oily. I’m not kidding when I say that you can literally open a jar straight after applying it, that’s how quickly the formula absorbs into the skin.
My hubby, who has super dry hands and is the BIGGEST critic of hand cream formulas only uses this one.
The formula itself is just superb & contains the following ingredients:
UREA: Binds moisture to the skin, has a gentle exfoliating action and contains anti-itch & anti-microbial properties. Urea soothes & smooths the skin’s surface.
CERAMIDES: Prevent moisture loss & strengthens the skin’s barrier.
NMF: Natural Moisturising factors are found in healthy skin. They include amino acids, inorganic salts, lactate & urea. These are replicated in the Urea Repair Plus range for optimal hydration.
As with all Eucerin products, this hand cream contains no fragrance or artificial colours (biggest irritants in skincare). The formulation is so clean it’s recommended for those with Xerosis, Psoriasis, Diabetes & mature skin.
Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm (R79.99 for a 10ml tube)
I have a bit of a subversive view on lip balms. I think 90% of them don’t work. Think about it, how often do you apply a lip balm, only to have to re-apply it half an hour later because your lips are dry? You don’t apply your moisturiser every half hour, so why is this happening with lip balms?
I recently asked a few people (men & women) what they want in a lip balm – every single one mentioned these two things:
1. A nice smell – preferably minty
2. A Cooling feeling or tingle on the lips
Fragrance is the biggest irritant in skincare & ingredients like menthol, mint, peppermint, cinnamon, Linalool are terrible irritants but are often found in lip products because they cause a tingle. These ingredients are also VERY common in lip plumping product (they don’t really plum the lips, BTW), they irritate them, so they feel fuller.
How do lip balms work?
Lip balms work by sealing in moisture, preventing evaporation in cold air. Now remember, the skin on the lips is thinner, more sensitive & has fewer sebaceous glands.
So, what ingredients should we be looking for in a good lip balm? You want soothing, nourishing and repairing ingredients.
The Eucerin Intensive lip Balm contains:
Panthenol to moisturise & provide anti-inflammatory benefits
Evening Primrose oil to regenerate the lips protective barrier
Licochalcone (a derivative of lycopene from the tomato) to calm irritation & reduce redness
Glycerol to intensively moisturise
Unlike typical lip balms which just sit on the surface of the lips, this one has a thinner, almost fluid like consistency, meaning it penetrates into the lips, addressing dryness & irritation. You don’t need to constantly re-apply it, because it starts working after the first application. It can also be used around the peri-oral area (around the lips) if you’re battling with very dry, red or inflamed skin there.
I have never found a lip balm as good as this one, and that the absolute truth!
Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS Lotion 5% Urea, (R185.99 for 250ml)
When the skin on my body is really dry, I find the only moisturiser that really hydrates and conditions it, is the Eucerin UreaRepair Plus Lotion 5% Urea. This body lotion has been my favourite for over 10 years – as a beauty editor, that’s quite something.
What causes skin to become dry?
Dry skin can be caused by internal factors such as a genetic predisposition; hormonal influences; biological skin ageing; as well as diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, diabetes or ichthyosis. External causes can include heat, cold or humidity; UV-induced skin ageing; frequent washing; insufficient fluid intake and extreme medical treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy or dialysis.
To make matters worse, dry skin is also often itchy. The condition, termed xerosis, is extremely widespread, affecting approximately one-third of working adults between the ages of 16 and 70. With increasing age, it becomes even more prevalent.
The fragrance-free, super gentle yet hydrating formula used in the Eucerin Urea Repair Plus 5% urea Lotion contains Urea, amino acids, lactic acid and ceramides – all proven to alleviate and soothe symptoms of dry skin for up to 48 hours. It also repairs the skin’s natural ability to fight dry skin in 3 different ways by binding, then locking, then distributing moisture effectively in the skin.
This body lotion can also be used by those suffering from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and diabetes – it’s that gentle & carefully formulated. Noticeable improvements can be seen even after six days of application. Those who suffer from dry skin can finally feel comfortable in their own skin. Noticeable improvements can be seen even after six days of application – although when I use mine, my skin improves almost immediately.
While I generally prefer the 5% Urea version, there’s also a Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS Lotion 10% Urea, (R219.99 for 250ml) for super dry skin that’s prone to eczema & psoriasis.
Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS Replenishing Body Wash 5% Urea, R205.99 for 400ml
This gentle, fragrance free body wash has been proven to have excellent skin tolerability on even extremely dry, itchy skin. In fact, using it actually prevents the skin from drying out, even with regular washing.
My family & I love it, especially in between seasons when our skin seems to be drier. It has a light later, gently cleans the skin and leaves it hydrated. Often when I use this, I don’t even need to apply a body lotion after.
The formula contains 5% Urea to bind moisture to the skin while gently exfoliating it.
This product is my dermatologist’s top recommendation for people with very dry, eczema prone skin, or those with atopic dermatitis.
