Having been a beauty journo for almost 18 years, I’m well aware of which active ingredients truly make a difference when applied topically.

The absolute gold standard of anti-ageing ingredients has to go Retinol. It’s the one active that does it all from stimulating collagen & elastin production, to plumping fines lines and wrinkles. Because it has an exfoliating action, it also smooths the skin’s surface and even helps with acne & blemishes.

Retinol is the one ingredient that I look for in an anti-ageing skincare product given my age (46 yrs), and the fact that I want results quickly. And that’s the beauty of a retinol product – you’ll see a difference in your skin very, very soon after using it.

When Neostrata asked me to try out three products from their new Correct line, I was BEYOND excited.

Not only do I love the Neostrata brand (you can read some previous posts HERE, HERE, HERE & HERE), but this range combines Retinol, with some other seriously great ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides and Alpha Hydroxy Acids.

Before I chat more about the Neostrata Correct line of products, I briefly want to touch on pollution and its effects on the skin.

Did you know that exposure to pollution can lead to premature aging?

You may be wondering what constitutes pollution. Well, there’s a long list, but let me share a few examples of pollutants: exhaust fumes, chemical & petroleum refineries, manufacturing processes and cigarette smoke. If you live in a city, I’m afraid there’s no way of escaping these pollutants.

Most pollutants don’t actually penetrate the skin at first; instead they trigger a chain reaction of damage on the skin’s surface. Left unchecked, this damage leads to a breakdown & deterioration of everything skin needs to look healthy & prevent premature ageing.

The effects of pollution on the skin include redness & sensitivity, dull & uneven skin tone, enlarged pores, dark spots, dry, irritable skin, and, as mentioned previously, premature ageing.

So, how do we protect our skins from the damaging effects of pollution?

We need to use skincare filled with ingredients that counteract damage, especially at night!

For those not aware, it’s at nighttime when our skin goes into repair mode, so it makes sense to treat it with products that really make the most of this “skin downtime” and counteract the effects of pollution on the skin.

Now, let’s chat about the new Neostrata CORRECT line of products.

First up is the Neostrata CORRECT Overnight Anti-Pollution Treatment, R1,110 (BUY)

This overnight antioxidant gel-cream targets lack of radiance and rough texture. It has a wonderful, almost cooling texture and because it’s a gel/cream hybrid, absorbs really quickly.

It works with the skin’s natural circadian rhythm in 2 ways:

  1. Recovery: The formula contains Polyhydroxy Acids that renews the skin through gentle exfoliation, revealing fresh, radiant skin come morning. Polyhydroxy Acids also have skin barrier building properties, and a healthy skin barrier means great looking skin.
  2. Fortify: Lilac Plant Cell Extract, a powerful antioxidant, helps fortify the skin for the next day by mopping up free radicals (nasty volatile compounds in the atmosphere that damage cells) and soothing skin with its anti-inflammatory properties. Also added to the formula are Amino Acids & Evening Primrose Oil that hydrate & support skins moisture barrier that balances its lipid ratio to better support skin healing.

To use, you simply massage a thin layer onto the clean skin at night. It can be used on dry, normal, oily and even sensitive skin.

Next up is my favourite product from the line, the Neostrata Correct Comprehensive Retinol 0.3% Night Serum, R1,625 (BUY)

The formula contains 0.3% pure, stabilized Retinol that works to stimulate collagen & elastin production, plump fine lines & deep-set wrinkles & smooth skin. There’s also NeoGlucosamine which firms the skin, diminishes fine lines and evens out the skin tone. Hyaluronic Acid has been added to keep the skin hydrated & plump.

Apply this formula to clean skin once or twice weekly, working up to every day as tolerated. My skin is used to Retinol, so I’m able to use this every day. I apply a pea sized amount onto clean skin and allow it to absorb, then I apply the Overnight Anti-Pollution Treatment over it.

As I’ve said before, I’m not the biggest fan of eye creams, however, as I get older, I can actually see the benefits of using one, especially when it comes to nourishing the area & firming sagging skin.

I’ve absolutely loved using the Neostrata Correct Comprehensive Retinol Eye Cream R1,110 (BUY)

It’s rather potent as it’s formulated with 0.05% pure, stabilized retinol and works to target fine lines, crepiness and dark under eye circles. NeoGlucosamine gently exfoliates and fades discoloration, brightening the area.

As with all eye creams, you only need the smallest, pea sized amount. Apply onto the ring finger, then gently tap around the orbital bone until the cream is absorbed.

In the image below, I’m wearing no make up. I wanted to show you exactly how my skin looks after 3 weeks of using the Neostrata Correct Line which contains Retinol.

First time Retinol users need to build up their skin’s tolerance, so only use Retinol once or twice a week until the skin has acclimated.

If you have very dry skin, rosacea or eczema, or are using oral or topical medications for your skin, consult a GP or dermatologist before starting a Retinol cream.

Avoid using Retinol during pregnancy or when breast feeding.

All of the NeoStrata products are available online at DermaStore and from selected Aesthetic Medical Practitioners and medi-spas nationwide.

Interesting information. I was always under the impression that you should not use retinol around the eyes.

Hi Debs, not at all! In fact, Retinol CAN & SHOULD be used around the eyes as it is well tolerated. It’s a great ingredient & works quickly so visible results are noticeable within a month.

I’m very keen on trying this range (i’m 44) but want to ask if it can be used with these products I’m currently using from Neostrata: foaming glycolic Wash, daily peel pads & ultra day time smoothing cream.
