I did it!
I finally got my box of the Schwarzkopf Palette Deluxe Oil-Care Color and tried it out.
To say I’m thrilled, somewhat astounded, and totally impressed with the results is an understatement! I was told time and time again by haircare professionals to “manage my expectations”, with each of them telling me the best I could expect with box colour was grey coverage and a somewhat flat colour.
Well, I’m not sure what I did right (I followed the instructions to a T), but my colour is spot on. It also looks VERY multi-dimensional – just like after I’ve visited the salon!
I decided on the Schwarzkopf Palette Deluxe Oil-Care Color in 6-0 Dark blonde colour which is available at Clicks stores nationwide & online (R105 – BUY).
I decided on a permanent colour as it ensures 100% grey coverage and the colour results are long lasting. Normally, I’d opt for a light or medium brown, but I was advised that a dark blonde would probably work better since my hair was very golden with light reddish/orange tones. Also, because I have long hair, I opted for 3 boxes (but only used two).
This is what my hair looked like before I used the Schwarzkopf Palette Deluxe Oil-Care Color. Note the grey’s as well as the dark brown re-growth. And notice how washed out my colour looks. Last time I visited my hairdresser was end January!
What’s in the Schwarzkopf Palette Deluxe Oil-Care Color box?
- Application bottle with developer
- Tube of colour crème
- Gloves
- Hair Mask – You must condition after doing a box colour and all formulas come with a conditioner. If you skip the conditioner step, it leaves the cuticle open & the colour keeps working, so hair can end up much darker than you wanted.
- Instructions
You mix the formula by squeezing the Color-Creme tube into the activator. You then give the formula a good shake before applying.
What you need
- Hair sectioning clips or grips to secure hair.
- An old towel to protect clothing
- Vaseline to apply around the hairline & ears to protect the skin from any staining.
- Timer
Important:
You need to do a patch test 48 hours before applying box colour to ensure there is no reaction. Remember, this is a chemical process!
You can really only go 1 shade lighter and 1 shade darker than your current hair colour.
Hair that has been previously coloured will be more porous, so will absorb more colour. Remember, colour on colour goes darker.
Always opt for a colour lighter than you think you’ll need.
Try and relax and enjoy the process.
Tip: To protect the scalp, leave hair unwashed for 3 days to ensure the natural oils protect it from the chemicals in the dye.
How does box colour differ from professional colour?
- Box colour has no qualified person tailor making your colour to suit your specific colour needs.
- Box colour contains pigments that can be challenging to remove, even by a hairstylist.
How to apply:
Part your hair into a middle parting.
Use the applicator bottle and apply the formula down the parting, using your other hand to gently press the formula into the roots.
Use the end of the nozzle on the applicator bottle (or a comb with a super think handle) to take a small section of hair flipping it over to the other side. Then, apply colour to that path. Continue like that right the way down the left & right sides of the head.
Once roots are down, allow the colour to develop for 20 minutes.
Apply rest of mixture to mid lengths, working to ends.
Allow to work for 10 mins
Total developer time is 30 mins.
Just before rinsing colour out, emulsify it with a little water. This prevents any lines or streaks.
Rinse till water runs clear
Towel dry, then apply conditioning mask. Leave on for 10 – 15 minutes, then rinse.
Blow dry
