Are you battling with dark spots, uneven skin tone or a general dull complexion?

Being 45 years old, I battle with all of the above! So, when Clarins challenged me to use their Bright Plus range for 21 days and report back I was more than up for the challenge.

The Clarins Bright Plus range offers a complete brightening experience using products that contain brightening plant extracts that stop melanin in its tracks before it can be released onto the skin surface.

But how, you may wonder?

Clarins Researchers have identified the 3 stages of dark spot formation due to melanin over-production:

Stage 1: Under normal conditions, there is a regular production of melanin by the melanocyte, which is transferred to the keratinocyte. This medium level of melanin pigments in the epidermis is responsible for natural, even skin tone which is then affected by UV exposure and leads to future dark spots.

Stage 2: Under UV exposure, melanogenesis is enhanced by both the direct hypersensitivity of the melanocyte and exosomes. This leads to an increase of melanin content in the keratinocyte, but not enough to be visible at skin surface. This is what Clarins refers to as dark spots in progress.

Stage 3: Over time, or due to more intense UV exposure, the quantity of melanin accumulated in the keratinocytes reaches the levels required to make the dark spots visible on the skin surface. These are stubborn dark marks or pigmentation.

Contained within the Clarins Bright Plus range is Acerola fruit extract, which is able to regulate the MELA EXO SYSTEM by inhibiting the message contained within the exosomes proteins which trigger an overproduction of melanin. There is also a “Brightening Complex” made up of raspberry and Alchemilla extract and Vitamin C that helps counteract the effects of daytime stress, minimizing dark spots & discolouration – this complex is found in the night cream (remember, it’s at night when the skin goes into regeneration mode, so using the correct products is key).

The range is made up of the following products:

Bright Plus Tri-Intensive Brightening Serum R835 for a 30mlBUY

This innovative brightening serum rebalances the 3 dimensions of a perfect complexion: contrast, colour and luminosity – for even, glowing skin. It works by reducing the appearance of dark spots for an even complexion thanks to Acerola extract, which also works to infuse luminosity into the skin from within. In addition, this serum also rebalances skin colour using Sandspurry extract, ensuring a brighter complexion.

I use the serum every morning and evening after cleansing, before moisturising on my face, neck & décolletage. The serum has great spread-ability, so a little goes a long way.

Tip: Serums are essential in your skincare regime as they have the ability to deeply penetrate the skin (in a way regular moisturisers can’t), so they really tackle the heart of the problem. The key with finding the correct serum for your skin is to identify what your skin concerns is, then choose the appropriate serum.

Bright Plus Brightening Day Lotion SPF 20 R910 for a 75mlBUY

This is a wonderfully lightweight, brightening lotion that helps overcome dullness by correcting dark spots and an uneven skin tone. It moisturises really well and because it has an SPF 20, it shields the skin from ageing UV rays and harsh environmental influences. I apply it after my serum on my face, neck & décolletage. I like that it leaves my skin with a velvety, matte finish.

Bright Plus Brightening Revive Night Cream R825 for a 50mlBUY

I just adore this nourishing night-time treatment that turns around dull, uneven skin while you sleep. It contains the Clarins brightening complex of Raspberry and Alchemilla extracts and Vitamin C that helps counter the effects of daytime stress to minimise dark spots and discolouration for a more radiant, even complexion upon waking. It has a wonderfully comforting smell, beautiful texture and really hydrates the skin.

Bright Plus Brightening Body Veil R540 for a 220mlBUY

I’ve used this body lotion many times over the years and absolutely adore it. It offers dual protection against sun damage with its SPF 20 and also keeps the skin dry & matte while evening out the skin tone. It feels like a nourishing moisturiser yet protects like a sunscreen. It also smells sublime. It really is my go-to daytime body treat come summer.

In the interest of transparency, I have to tell you that I’ve used the Bright Plus range many times before – always with great results. This time around has been no different. Within two weeks, I started seeing a noticeable brightening of my skin. It looked more luminous, and I felt comfortable going without makeup. While pigmentation and dark spots were still visible, there was a slight improvement. As I write this, it’s been 21 days of using the range. My skin looks fantastically bright and luminous. I can still see dark marks, but they are looking a little lighter. I also know (because of using the range before) that with continued use, these dark marks will look less prominent. Thank you Bright Plus for giving my skin a gorgeous glow.

I have a question Candice, I recently saw products that apparently increase melanin production in order to tan darker with less sun time. If I understand the 3 stages of dark spot formation due to melanin over-production correctly, you’ll end up with bad pigmentation/uneven skin tone/ dark spots later on? Tan now look ridiculous later? ?
