The Guess brand opened its doors in California in 1977. It fast became a fashion leader, capitalizing on the emerging designer jeans fashion trend of the late 1980’s. In 1981, Guess sold its very first pair of jeans to Bloomingdale’s department store. Since then, Guess has become one of the world’s most recognizable and influential brand names. Guess launched their first fragrance in the late 1980’s and have since added over two dozen scents to their fragrance collection.
Today, I’m reviewing seven outstanding scents from the brand – 4 for women and 3 for men.
Guess 1981 Indigo EDT For Women, R585 for a 50ml EDT – BUY
This is a delightful floral-woody scent designed for warm, balmy days. Think of it as the aromatic equivalent of a white T-shirt and worn jeans.
Top notes include lilac, oceanic notes and fig, which is the most notable accord in the opening. As the fragrance develops, the floral notes of Narcissus, iris and blue lotus come through. The dry down is unusual with prominent notes Pinot Noir grapes, red wine, cedar and vetiver. I was quite surprised by the scents lasting power of around 6 hours.
Guess 1981 Indigo Men R695 for a 100ml EDT – BUY
I think this woody, aromatic scent with notes of fig, coconut water, lavender and amber are super sexy. The scent opens with a fresh burst thanks to notes of bergamot, sage, blue lavender and sweet fig. The middle notes contain coconut nectar – by far the most prominent note – coupled with Iris, Tonka bean and oakmoss. The base contains sexy notes of musk, amber and cedar.
Guess 1981 Los Angeles Women R695 for a 50ml EDT – BUY
This is the newest fragrance launch from the Guess brand and is best described as a modern and sexy scent that captures the essence of the Guess women and her California dreams. The opening of the fragrance begins with succulent notes of red currant, mandarin orange and pear. The middle notes contain a floral bouquet made up of jasmine, peony and orange blossom notes. The base notes include vanilla, cedar, praline, musk and ambroxan, adding a sophisticated warmth to the scent.
Guess 1981 Los Angeles Men R595 for a 100ml EDT – BUY
Channeling the modern Guess man, this fragrance can best be described as fresh and masculine with a very sexy energy. The textural top notes deliver an aromatic combination of pepper, plum and bergamot, boosted by bracing spearmint and ginger. The warm, woody background adds exciting contrast with its perfectly blended notes of tobacco and amber.
Guess 1981 Men R695 for a 100ml EDT – BUY
Is your man looking for a scent that’s light, refreshing and doesn’t overwhelm? If yes, then this is the scent for him! The top notes include violet leaves and bergamot which make for a delicate opening with the faintest hint of spice. Familiar heart notes of earthy cedarwood and gray amber and oakmoss give the scent depth, while the base of woodsy, earthy and musk notes ground the scent in a really classic and sophisticated way.
Guess 1981 Women R585 for a 50ml EDT – BUY
Launched in 2017, this contemporary scent is a medley of florals, fruit and wood. I adore the soft, almost powdery opening that includes notes of ambrette seed and sweet violet petals. After a minute or two, one can smell the juicy pear, exotic jasmine and sandalwood notes. The dry down includes notes of rich cedar wood, earthy amber resin and animalic musk – giving the scent an enticing and sexy edge. What lingers on the skin is a sensual, sophisticated fragrance that is perfect for any occasion, day or night.
Guess by Marciano R995 for a 100ml EDP – BUY
This dazzling scent for women is just what’s needed to add a bit of spice to your fragrance collection! This scent blends citrus, floral and spicy accords, making for the perfect evening scent. Exotic star fruit, Curacao orange liquor, aromatic cardamom and grapefruit all come together in the opening notes, making for a powerful and energized olfactory journey. As the scent develops, the heart notes of sweet honeysuckle, night blooming jasmine and pink peony come to the fore, creating a decadent floral bouquet. The base notes of creamy vanilla, sensual musk and woody notes work to beautifully balance the fragrances intensity, making for a truly spellbinding scent.
