Purchasing a new bed or mattress is a big and very important investment – one that deserves proper thought, given that we spend more time on our beds that any other kind of furniture.

Always spend the most you can afford on a mattress. A cheap mattress won’t give you the support you require for a good night’s rest. Also, a lower priced mattress may compromise your comfort. I think it’s a good idea to shop around, read online reviews and opt for a trusted brand.

Choose a mattress from a trusted brand – there’s a reason some brands are more reputable than others. Seek out these brands as they usually have good quality products coupled with great customer support.

Don’t ever buy a new bed without first considering the mattress. If possible, you should buy a new bed & mattress at the same time. The reason for this is an old mattress on a new bed won’t last as long or give you the proper back & spine support you need.

Try Before you buy. Pop into one of the many, specialty bed & mattress shops and chat to the consultants about what your needs and preferences are. Do you prefer a hard or soft mattress? Perhaps you want a mattress that contains memory foam? Maybe you have back problems and need extra support? Most good bed shops encourage you spend a few minutes laying on the mattress/bed to see if it’s comfortable for you.

Dress comfortably when going mattress shopping and don’t forget to take your pillow along. When testing mattresses, you’ll want to be as comfy as possible. While I’m not advocating visiting the bed shop in your PJ’s, you want to choose loose fitting, comfortable clothing. Think about it, you don’t want to be trying out mattresses while wearing a formal suit & stiletto heels! It’s also a great idea to bring your pillow along so you can get a real feel for the mattress. By contrast, a good night’s sleep not only makes you feel better, but can actually help you eat less, exercise better and be healthier.
