Our skin is constantly battling an onslaught of environmental aggressors like pollution, UV damage, cigarette smoke and air conditioning. Add to that a good dose of stress and you can be pretty darn sure that your skin’s aging process is in overdrive! Exposure to these aggressors lead to uneven skin tone, hyper pigmentation, fine lines, dullness, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
The good news is that we can stave off the damage these aggressors do by adding antioxidants to our skincare. And one of the most effective antioxidants is Vitamin C. The latest research shows that Vitamin C can enhance the skin’s natural defense system, helping it defend itself from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when unstable molecules in the environment (known as free radicals) disrupt the skin and work to change it from the inside out. Antioxidants effectively ‘mop up’ these free radicals before they can cause any damage.
Enter the new Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum (R1495 for a 30ml bottle). It contains an ultra-stable (Vitamin C is a notoriously unstable ingredient) Vitamin C complex with advanced bio-technology that delivers the natural antioxidant power of Vitamin C where it’s needed most. It works to brighten, firm and reduce the appearance of fine lines, while enhancing skin’s defenses.
The formula also contains lactic acid to exfoliate and brighten the skin; Sophora japonica Flower Extract to firm and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and Chia seed oil, which is rich in antioxidants and has tremendous moisturising properties.
Because I’m a big believer in the power of topical Vitamin C, I really wanted to put this product to the test properly and use it for a good two months before blogging about it. For the first two weeks, I used it on clean skin both morning and evening prior to moisturising. Thereafter, I used it in the mornings only as I was using a Retinol serum at night (Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules).
The results have been pretty amazing, especially in terms of radiance – my skin looks clearer and has a lovely glow. While I don’t really have deep wrinkles, I do have a few fine lines, and these seem slightly less prominent.
I’ll admit I was slightly perplexed at the instructions as they say to use over a clean neck and face morning and evening. However, there is no indication of exactly how much to use – so I chatted to Dermalogica SA’s trainer and she recommended a full dropper. I find that’s more than enough for both my face and neck.
Tip: Vitamin C is an excellent ingredient for minimizing scarring – especially those caused by acne.
