Let your lips do the talking this Summer with a stand out statement pout.
Bold pinks, bright oranges and racy reds are just the tones for adding some tropical heat to your makeup look. And for those of you who prefer a neutral lip look, I’ve got you covered too with a selection of my favourite nudies. There are also a variety of textures to choose from, with mattes, glosses and stains dominating the landscape.

I have a real soft spot for YSL makeup because it’s just so luxe and beautifully formulated. I did do a mini review on the YSL Tatouage Couture Matte Stain (swatches 1 & 2) on my Instagram stories when I received it, but for those of you that missed it, here are my thoughts.
This liquid lip formula imparts an ultra-matte stain onto the lips coupled with seriously impactful colour. The quick drying formula is super lightweight, and lips fell almost naked even though they are saturated in bold colour. The spatula-like applicator is great because it allows for a very precise application – a bit like a lip liner, but with the control of a brush. The ink-like formula gives the lips 8 hours of wear without application – and trust me when I say that 8 hours of wear is EXACTLY what you’ll get – even more because this imparts a SERIOUS stain to the lips.
I’m a sucker for a bold, bright pink and I just love the YSL Tatouage Couture Matte Stain in Rose Pink which I’m wearing in the pic above. I actually apply the formula, then two minutes later remove it – the stain it leaves speaks to the hugely popular ‘popsicle mouth trend – only a bit more intense.
If you’re more of a red lip gal, try the Rouge Tatouage – it’s a winner.
Okay, I have to give credit where it’s due and think that Urban Decay make the very best lip glosses. The Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lipgloss in Savage (swatch 6) (R290) is currently on high rotation in my makeup bag. It’s a blaring bright pink that coats the lips in relatively sheer but wearable popping pink colour. This is a great option for those wanting to try bold colour, but would like to start off with something a little more sheer.
Spring and summer are the perfect seasons for lip stains and the cutesy pie, limited edition Water Lip Stains by Clarins (R?) are just the thing if you’re looking to rock the season ‘popsicle mouth’ trend. I received two to try: Orange Water & Red Water (Swatches 3 & 4)
Formulated with 77% water and infused with aloe vera and raspberry extract, the Clarins Water Lip Stain has a light liquid consistency only slightly more viscous than water. There’s a mini brush applicator that works well with the very liquid formula, allowing for a precise application. The formulation is rather runny, so take your time applying this and use a small amount at a time. Even though both shades are very pigmented, they are buildable in that you could either opt for a soft tint or really layer to achieve an intense pop of colour. Once the stain is dry, the formula is 100% transfer proof, but does fade after eating.
If you like rich, matte colour coupled with hydration (hello, who doesn’t?), then try the YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats.
I received the colour ‘Crazy Tangerine’ (swatch 7) which is a bold shade of orange. What sets this formula apart from other matte’s is its moisturizing benefits and antioxidant protection. There’s carrot extract to condition lips, rosemary extract to support natural skin restoration and a complex of proteins, sugars, and animo acids that draw water from the atmosphere into the lips keeping them hydrated. Basically, this matte formula imparts great colour while leaving your lips feeling soft, soothe and hydrated.
I adore Clarins lipsticks and find their formulas always live up to my expectations. The new Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet (R365) is a sensorial formula that is velvety smooth without drying the lips out. It offers 6 hours of hydrations & contains apricot oil to comfort and nourish the lips. I like how smooth, creamy and lightweight the formula is, and how beautifully it glides on the lips. I love the ‘Spicy Chilli’ (swatch 11) colour which coats the lips in an intense bold orange matte colour. For those gals that prefer a pinker tone, the ‘Pink Cranberry’ (Swatch 10) will have your heart a flutter.
If you love a neutral lip…
I know you’ll adore the Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit in Echelon (R120) . This was the first product I tried from this cult brand that has just launched in South Africa at Clicks.
The kit comes with a liquid lipstick and a matching lip liner (not pictured) in packaging that’s “cough” reminiscent of Kylie’s Lip Kit #JustSaying.
The colour is the PERFECT nude for me because it’s on the cooler side (swatch 5). The liquid lipstick applies smoothly without being patchy or needing a second application. It’s super, SUPER lightweight, does not dry lips in the least and lasts a good few hours. I’ve also applied gloss over it very successfully (the Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lipgloss in Naked). You can happily have a few drinks knowing this will stay put, however you may need a touch up after eating a meal. I’d definitely say this is one of the best liquid lip formulas I’ve tried.
I have to say that the Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lipgloss in ‘Naked’ (swatch 12) is currently my favourite nude gloss. When worn on it’s own, it imparts a very subtle neutral colour that gives the lips beautiful shine while making them appear a little bigger and fuller. This gloss also wears well over all the matte formulas mentioned above, and works to tone down the bright colours a notch or two. The formula is laced with Vitamin E & peppermint oil that hydrates lips while plumping and giving them a slight tingle .
I love the nude colour, the applicator that really applies the product perfectly and the initial minty tingle that gives the lips a plumped feel. If you’re looking for the perfect nude gloss, this is the one!
While I’m not really one for a frosted gloss, I quite like the holographic effect of the new Almay Goddess Glosses in Angelic (swatch 8) & Cosmic (swatch 9). Aside from giving the lips an iridescent glow, these glosses are made using pomegranate, grape & raspberry oils so leave lips feeling moisturised and soothe – never sticky. I also like that they are hypoallergenic and fragrance free. I like using them on their own for a pretty, subtle iridescent glow, over lipstick to create a holographic effect.
Which of the above lippies or you keen to try?
