It’s so important to cleanse your skin properly. Every evening, before you go to bed, ensure you’ve removed all your make-up or you’ll end up with nasty breakouts and soiled pillowcases (sis!). And, just so we’re very clear, quickly dragging a wipe over your face before you fall into bed is not proper cleansing; I’m talking about a thorough cleanse with a proper balm and a hot face cloth.
Hot cloth cleansers have become all the range of late. In essence, they rely on a comfortably hot cloth to remove cleanser and any traces of makeup. In addition, they also gently exfoliate the skin, leaving it with a gorgeous glow.
Why cleanse with a hot cloth?
Our skin has a natural barrier (called the acid mantle), which protects it from bacteria and allows it to hold onto moisture. Stripping this protective layer with harsh cleansers can damage and dehydrate the skin.
Cleaning your skin with a gentle balm (like Nkuto butter), that’s exceptionally mild and made using pure oils and natural ingredients, is very effective. Because excess oil is wiped away with a textured, 100% cotton or muslin face cloth, all impurities and dead cells are removed while skin is left naturally clean, soft and exfoliated.
I love a hot cloth cleanser in winter, and my current favourite is the Skoon Hot Cloth Cleanser with Nkuto butter R525 (buy it here). The muslin face cloth retails for R240 for a pack of three (buy it here).
Nkuto butter contains a blend of organic Shea and pure, cold pressed African oils. It has a rich and velvety texture that beautifully melts away impurities. It’s great for all skin types and is free from preservatives. Below is an image that shows all its ingredients.
Fun Fact: The Skoon Hot Cloth Cleanser Nkuto Butter was inspired by the traditional Roman bath, where cleansing took place prior to bathing! The skin was massaged with fragrant oils and literally scraped down with specialized spatulas to remove dirt and debris. Water was purely for relaxation and therapy.
How to use Nkuto butter:
Warm a small knob of the cleansing Nkuto Butter in your palms. Gently massage into dry skin, taking extra care around the delicate eye area. Wipe away excess on face, neck and décolletage, using a cloth soaked in hand-hot water. Because this cleanser is preservative free, it’s best to avoid getting any water onto the actual product or packaging as this can cause mould to develop. Always dry your hands before unscrewing the lid.
It’s best to use this cleanser at night. In the morning, refresh your skin with a splash of water.
TIP: I’d recommend washing the cloth after every use. You can either wash by hand or throw it into the machine.
