Hi, my name is Candice-Lee and I’m fanatical about my teeth. (I’ve also been waiting for years to use the term ‘oral fixation’ in a beauty story.)
I visit my dentist twice a year for my check-ups, brush and floss twice a day (sometimes more, depending on what I eat) and don’t have one filling – I’m 40years old, just by the way. #gloating
While I can (vaguely) remember the last time I went to bed with my make-up on, I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to bed without brushing my teeth. It’s just something I’d never, EVER do.
My obsession with my teeth comes from my mother, who was militant about our oral health. She was forever lecturing me on the importance of correct brushing and daily flossing. ‘But flossing is so gross, mom’, I used to argue. “Well Candice, if you want gum disease and bad breath, don’t floss – the choice is yours” – that was her hard-hitting retort.
As someone who started flossing at around 10 years old (my mother even took me to the dentist for a lesson!) – I’m an expert. In my opinion, Oral-B do the two best flosses on the market. The Satin Floss R54.99 has a thin string that easily fits between teeth. The Essential Floss R39.99 has a specially designed filament with a polymer coating that makes plaque removal simple. It’s easy to insert, and is shred-resistant, so it won’t fray as it slides between your teeth. When choosing floss, avoid anything with a thick tape, as this can get stuck between the teeth.
When I hear people say they don’t floss because it’s gross, I ask them if they have a good dentist and explain why they’ll need one. I also ask them if they suffer from halitosis yet…
The holy trinity of oral health is made up of toothpaste, toothbrush and floss. Yes, mouthwash is beneficial, but if I had to choose between that and floss, floss would win, every time.
When Oral-B asked me if I’d like to trial their new Pro-Expert toothpaste for the month of September, I didn’t hesitate. To be honest, I’ve always wondered why Oral-B hadn’t yet developed a toothpaste, and was ecstatic to find out they had – and it’s been 15 years in the making.
The new Oral-B Pro-Expert R34.99 for a 75ml tube (available at Clicks, Dis-Chem and leading supermarkets) is referred to as a SMART toothpaste because it’s the first formula to harness a stabilized Stannous Fluoride complex. This complex offers a broad spectrum of benefits against cavities, plaque, gum problems and bad breath. It also provides your teeth with 3 x better protection than any other toothpaste on the market. It claims to improves the health and strength of your teeth from the very first brush. Regular use of Oral-B Pro Expert will:
- Help prevent cavities
- Fight gum problems
- Fight plaque build-up
- Block sensitivity
- Strengthen enamel
- Provide tartar control
- Remove stains
- Freshens breath
I know the whole stabilized Stannous Fluoride complex is a bit technical, so I found this great (short) video that explains exactly what it does and how it works.
I know what you’re thinking… Yeah, yeah, promises, promises. Well, for the next month I’m putting the Oral-B Pro Expert through its paces and will report back weekly. I only started using it on Monday, so can’t really comment as to whether it’s working just yet. I do however like the mild, slightly minty taste it leaves in my mouth. I’m hoping for slightly whiter, brighter teeth come month end. But, as I like a glass of red wine (or two) in the evenings, and strong, black coffee throughout the day, I’m not sure I’ll see much of a difference. I’ll let you know.
