It’s usually during the winter months that skin gets really dry and irritated. The reason for this is twofold: As the temperature drops, moisture is literally sucked out of the air, making it drier. Then there’s the drying effects of internal heating, scolding hot baths or showers, and cold, icy winds. For a lot of people, winter means the flare-up of sensitive skin conditions like eczema.

Eczema -prone skin is generally dry and appears dull and rough. During flare-ups, certain areas display symptoms of extreme irritation with flaky patches that ooze, then thicken and dry up. These flare-ups can cause discomfort and severe itching, which can have a devastating impact on one’s quality of daily life.

The issue with sensitive skin is that it’s extremely reactive and can become itchy, tight, red and scaly when confronted with even the slightest aggression. When this happens, it’s of the utmost importance to choose products that are gentle and carefully formulated to soothe these conditions – those formulated without irritants such as fragrance or colour.

Is Your Skin Sensitive or Intolerant?

Often, there is confusion between the two.

Those with allergic skin often have sensitive, intolerant skin which can overreact to certain products, topical medications, body washes (often the foaming agent in the product is to blame) and moisturisers.

An allergy is not caused by skin being sensitive (although it often leads to skin sensitivity) and is in fact caused by an immune response. The symptoms may be severe and include redness, itching and even swelling. I wrote a previous article HERE about my experiences with a skin allergy.

Sensitive skin reacts more quickly and more strongly than normal skin to the same factors under the same conditions. This leads to unpleasant sensations like pulling, itching, tingling, redness and even dryness.

Sensitivity can be controlled by eliminating skin care products that aren’t well tolerated (especially those with fragrance, colour and certain essential oils) and replacing them with products that contain powerful moisturisers. Always choose products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and contain a minimum amount of ingredients. Avoid irritating and drying cleansers that tend to foam heavily and avoid anything containing alcohol as an ingredient.

If you or your family battle with sensitive skin conditions, rest assured that relief is at hand with Eau Thermale Avène, the #1 dermo cosmetic brand in Europe. Avène is often recommended by many of our top local dermatologists here in South Africa.

Avène Eau Thermale Thermal Spring Water (R159.95)

I’m never without a bottle of this soothing spray that can be used on face or body. The water contains a unique actives and microflora that restores balance to the skin. Because the Avène Eau Thermale Thermal Spring Water is captured directly at source using sterile technology, all its soothing and softening properties are preserved.

Avène XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil (R249.95)

This is a wonderfully gentle cleanser that can be used on both face and body. It is fragrance and soap free, doesn’t sting eyes and can even be used during flare-up’s. It contains omegas, lipids and the Avène thermal water and nourishes, soothes itching and restores the skin’s protective barrier.

Avène XeraCalm A.D Lipid-replenishing Balm (R319.95)

This nourishing balm is especially formulated for dry, itchy skin and contains only essential ingredients to minimize any risk of allergy. It can be used on face & body, has 0% preservatives and is fragrance and Paraben free. It nourishes and soothes while restoring the skin’s protective barrier.

Avène Cicalfate Repair Cream (R199.95)

This restorative cream is perfect for use on dry lesions and scratches. It contains Sucralfate, an active that facilitates epidermal restoration. Copper & Zinc Sulfates act as anti-bacterial agents while assisting the skin’s restoration process. It is also fragrance and Paraben free.

The TOLÉRANCE EXTRÊME range is specially formulated for hypersensitive, intolerant or allergic skin. The range contains essential actives for the most sensitive skin. No preservatives, fragrance, Parabens or irritating ingredients have been added and the formula contains only actives selected for their purity, tolerance and efficacy. Also, all the products in this are 100% sterile and remain this way until the last drop. I was amazed to learn that the formulas have a delicate membrane that opens and closes so the contents are never exposed to air or bacteria. This ensure unequalled safety and efficacy for intolerant skin.

Avène products can be purchased at Clicks, Dischem and select pharmacies nationwide.

Hi Candice-Lee thank you for this informative blog article. I’ve used some of their products and have been pleasantly surprised. I can’t afford all of them and so it was great to learn about the repair cream which I might have to purchase next.
My twin sister and I seem to suffer a great deal, we’re allergic to most shampoos, hair masks, I believe even certain facial products because this winter saw my forehead/scalp reacting to the point of trying to hide my hairline with a scarf or hat.To answer the competition question, people with sensitive skin should definitely stay away from alcohol and products that foam excessively (I was surprised by this).

Informative post. Exactly what I need.

Too much alcohol in products should be avoided as well as parabens and fragrance in skin care especially face care.

I had an allergic reaction earlier this year to a product, a brand I loved but now I’m scared to go near it again. I used avene products to get me through the period directly after reaction and haven’t stopped since. Fragrances, preservatives and certain actives like sqaulene can cause reactions. I’m still not sure what ingredients caused my flare up.
