It’s usually during the winter months that skin gets really dry and irritated. The reason for this is twofold: As the temperature drops, moisture is literally sucked out of the air, making it drier. Then there’s the drying effects of internal heating, scolding hot baths or showers, and cold, icy winds. For a lot of people, winter means the flare-up of sensitive skin conditions like eczema.
Eczema -prone skin is generally dry and appears dull and rough. During flare-ups, certain areas display symptoms of extreme irritation with flaky patches that ooze, then thicken and dry up. These flare-ups can cause discomfort and severe itching, which can have a devastating impact on one’s quality of daily life.
The issue with sensitive skin is that it’s extremely reactive and can become itchy, tight, red and scaly when confronted with even the slightest aggression. When this happens, it’s of the utmost importance to choose products that are gentle and carefully formulated to soothe these conditions – those formulated without irritants such as fragrance or colour.
Is Your Skin Sensitive or Intolerant?
Often, there is confusion between the two.
Those with allergic skin often have sensitive, intolerant skin which can overreact to certain products, topical medications, body washes (often the foaming agent in the product is to blame) and moisturisers.
An allergy is not caused by skin being sensitive (although it often leads to skin sensitivity) and is in fact caused by an immune response. The symptoms may be severe and include redness, itching and even swelling. I wrote a previous article HERE about my experiences with a skin allergy.
Sensitive skin reacts more quickly and more strongly than normal skin to the same factors under the same conditions. This leads to unpleasant sensations like pulling, itching, tingling, redness and even dryness.
Sensitivity can be controlled by eliminating skin care products that aren’t well tolerated (especially those with fragrance, colour and certain essential oils) and replacing them with products that contain powerful moisturisers. Always choose products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and contain a minimum amount of ingredients. Avoid irritating and drying cleansers that tend to foam heavily and avoid anything containing alcohol as an ingredient.
