If you’re concerned with aging, Retinol is the one ingredient you should consider including into your skincare regime.
Why? Retinol yields visible results very quickly. It regenerates the skin by increasing cell turnover; smoothes skin’s texture as it is a powerful exfoliant; firms the skin by boosting collagen production; refines the complexion by helping reduce pores size while unclogging pores, and brightens and evens out the skin tone.
If you read my blog regularly, you’ll know I’m a big fan of the Dermalogica Age Smart Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5% (read post HERE).
This month saw the brand release a new 1% version that goes even further to accelerates skin renewal, while reducing the appearance of skin aging. It’s perfect for advanced Retinol users like me, who desire a more enhanced performing retinol product.
The clinical strength Dermalogica Age Smart Overnight Retinol Repair 1% contains encapsulated Retinol. Now, Retinol is extremely delicate and can looses its potency as soon as it’s exposed to light or air. Overnight Retinol Repair 1% uses the latest, most efficient micro-encapsulation technology to protect the Retinol molecules inside with single-layer polymeric shells. Upon use, these ‘shells’ collapse and break down into invisible particles, helping retain the level or retinol potency in the formulation. This ensures that until the moment of release, the retinol remains fresh and active, thanks to its improved stability.
The other key ingredients in the formula include:
- Squalane from Brazillian sugar cane that restores the skin’s moisture and suppleness.
- Palmitoyl tripeptide-5 and TAUT Peptides to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phospahte (Vitamin C) that acts as an antioxidant and reduces skin discoloration.
- Active Polysaccharides to hydrate and prevent water loss in the skin, helping soften fine lines.
- Licorice Extract to calm any irritation and provide antioxidant protection.
With a kick-ass anti ageing ingredient like Retinol, it’s important to allow your skin to acclimate.
Pre-Conditioning Phase: Mix 1 part Overnight Retinol Repair 1% with 3 parts Buffer Cream and apply to clean as your last skincare step in the evening. You can increase the ratio of Overnight Retinol Repair 1% to buffer to the Buffer Cream as your skin adjusts. If you have sensitive skin, apply the mixture every alternate evening.
On-going Treatment: Once your skin has acclimated, you can use your Overnight Retinol Repair 1% alone, prior to OR mixed with your moisturiser. After your skin has acclimated, use the product every evening.
It’s best to first use the Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5%, then move onto the stronger Overnight Retinol Repair 1%. Some skin types may experience dryness, dehydration, flaking and photosensitivity in the first couple of weeks while the skin is adapting to the activity of the product. It’s very important to wear sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure when using a retinol formula. Failing to do so will lead to pigmentation and discoloration.
- Customise with buffer cream as needed.
- Use SPF30 or higher daily.
- Be consistent and use as recommended.
- Only use at night.
- Discontinue 2 weeks prior to holiday.
- Use active serums in the morning.
- Alternate other active products at night.
- Use a slightly heavier moisturiser than normal.
- Use exfoliation or peels for 72 hours.
- Use while taking Roaccutane.
- Use pre or post waxing for 72 hours.
- Use while pregnant or nursing.
- Layer 1% with other treatment products.
Contraindications of using Retinol: If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a physician prior to using overnight retinol repair 1%. Retinol should not be used at least 72 hours before or after waxing or exfoliation. Avoid using other targeted treatment products directly with overnight retinol repair 1% or alternate usage. It’s important to use sunscreen with a minimum SPF30.
Using Retinol in summer isn’t a bad idea at all. During warmer months, the air contains more moisture since it’s humid, so it leaves skin naturally more moisturised. Because the skin is so hydrated, there ends up being less flaking, enabling it to easily tolerate the dehydration that the retinoid brings on than it would in winter.
The Dermalogica Age Smart Overnight Retinol Repair 1% retails for R1680 of a 30ml and includes a 15ml Buffer Cream. It’s only available in a retail size through a professional skin care therapist (not available on the dermalogica online shop).
