A month ago I was holidaying in Turkey and Greece, enjoying the European summer and soaking up the sun. Being a beauty writer, I’m well aware of the dangers overexposure to UV rays can cause, so I was militant about protecting my skin with the appropriate products. When I wasn’t swimming, I was wearing my wide-brimmed hat for extra protection (not only for my face, but for my hair and scalp too).
And yet, every evening when I got out the shower and began applying my moisturiser, I noticed how my pigmentation marks were getting more and more pronounced. I snapped this selfie (below) at the end of the holidays and was shocked at just how visible my pigmentation had become, especially on the top of my cheekbones and on my forehead.
When I got back to SA, I knew I had to implement a skincare regime that included a comprehensive range of products aimed at minimizing dark spots and pigmentation. Also, winter really is the BEST time to tackle pigmentation (in the hotter months, you want to PREVENT it) as we tend to spend less time outside and the sun’s rays are not as powerful.
A few months prior, I had received the SVR CLAIRIAL range of products that treats discolouration with proven efficacy. I also liked that the range is gentle, contains no allergens or parabens and is safe to use on even sensitive skin types.
The key ingredient in all the products is LUMIWHITE + a depigmenting complex that prevents the increase of pigmentation by blocking the activation pathways of melanin synthesis.
SVR CLAIRIAL SERUM (R655)
When I first tried this, I was quite taken aback with the unique texture that’s very lightweight and quite runny, but absorbs in seconds. It’s quite innovative in that it’s ultra fine texture is loaded with liquid crystals for extended moisturisation. It has an allergen-free fragrance, so can be used on even the most sensitive skin types.
The formula has an 8% depigmenting complex that reduces and dissolves all types of brown spots while preventing their reappearance. There’s also 2% stabilized vitamin C that activates radiance and helps even out the complexion, and a high molecular weight hyaluronic acid that boosts moisture content in the skin. A soft focus bio-snow has been added to immediately smoothe the skin and blur brown spots and colour irregularities. I use mine morning and evening on clean skin before I apply any moisturiser. The dropper tube attached to the serums nozzle (pic above) delivers just the right amount of product needed. To use, you simply hold the tube upright and gentle squeeze to release four doses of the serum.
SVR CLAIRIAL CRÈME 10 (R530)
This lightweight moisturiser can be used both day and evening and works to minimise pigmentation and dark spots. It has a very light, non-greasy texture and works synergistically with all the product in the range. Because this is a fluid, very dry skin types may need another, more hydrating moisturiser, and I’d recommend the SVR Liftiane Creme Rich (480) – Read more about it HERE
SVR CLAIRIAL PEEL (R625)
My favourite product from the range is the peel, which is essentially an exfoliating night cream. Along with the LUMIWHITE complex that tackles pigmentation, there is also 10% citric acid, 20% highly concentrated pure glycolic acid and 5% optimised vitamin C. Together, all these ingredients work to de pigment, smooth and refine the skin’s texture.
I use it three times a week on my face, neck and decolletage (not forgetting the back of my hands) after cleansing, in the evening. I then apply the CLAIRIAL CRÈME 10 moisturiser over, but again, if your skin is on the drier side, rather opt for the SVR Liftiane Creme Rich (480). Just a word of caution; It’s best to use any retexturizing products such as peels with glycolic acid and retinoids in the evening, as they make the skin sun sensitive. You will also need to use a sunscreen during the day (but you do that anyway, don’t you?)
SVR CLAIRIAL CC CRÈME (R475)
I do like a CC (colour correcting) cream and was excited to try this one. Again, the formula contains the LUMIWHITE + complex and also has a SPF 50 and offers comprehensive UVA/UVB protection against photo-ageing. The formula is quite dense, and if the ‘Beige’ colour (the only tone currently available in the range) suits your skin, this can easily replace your foundation – the medium-weight coverage is that good. Unfortunately it was a tad light for my (tanned) skin. I did speak to the training manager and she told me a medium shade will be introduced in the SA market next year.
SVR CLAIRIAL CRÈME SPF50+ (R440)
I mentioned earlier how important it is to use a good sunscreen when you’re on a mission to correct pigmentation – especially if your products contain ingredients like retinol’s or glycolic acids as these make the skin sun-sensitive (more prone to pigmentation if it’s not properly protected). Like the CC cream, it contains the LUMIWHITE + complex and also has a SPF 50 and offers comprehensive UVA/UVB protection against photo-ageing. It spreads easily without leaving any white traces and I actually find it to be quite nourishing. Come summer, it will be a staple in my beach bag.
Because I have SO many products I need to try, I really can only devote two, max three weeks to trying just one specific range. I’ve given the SVR CLAIRIAL range three weeks, and am really very impressed at the results. While my pigmentation is still there, it is far less visible. My skin also looks smoother and far more radiant. I would also HIGHLY recommend this range to women suffering with chloasma (mask of pregnancy), however would advise using it after baby has been born.
I’m wearing nothing buy moisturiser in this shot. Look how much clearer the top of my cheeks look! While you can still see the pigmentation marks on my forehead, I think they are far less pronounced.
