A good moisturiser is one of the key building blocks of a great skincare regime. A moisturiser should hydrate and nourish your skin, but also address your skin’s specific concerns. If you have oily skin, look for a light, oil-free gel formula. If your skin is dry, opt for richer formulations. Those with sensitive skin should be wary of fragrance and colour and ensure their chosen moisturiser is labelled “hypoallergenic”

Below are seven of my current must-have’s – and no matter what your skin type or concern, there’s one for you.

Estée Lauder DayWear Matte Oil Control Anti Oxidant Moisture Gel Cream (R515)

Lauder daywear matte prod

This cucumber scented day cream is a fresh, ultra light gel creme that contains MoistureMatte technology to control excess oil production for up to 10 hours. The formula is best for oily skin as, along with moisturising the skin and controlling oil production, it also reduces the look of enlarged pores. Included in the formula is an anti-oxidant complex that protects the skin from the onslaught of free radicals. It has a fresh smell and super lightweight texture that absorbs quickly, leaving the skin feeling fresh, smooth and hydrated throughout the day.

This formula is best for oily skin types.

Prevage Anti-Aging Moisture Lotion SPF30 PA++ (R1395)

Prevage moisture lotion day

I count the Prevage line of products among my favourite as they’re loaded with Idebenone – an extremely effective antioxidant. Now, antioxidants are so important in skincare to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals – those unstable molecules unleashed by the sun and environment. Research has also show that by adding antioxidants to sunscreens, the formulas effectiveness is boosted.

The Prevage Anti-Aging Moisture Lotion SPF30 PA++ contains high levels of both, and works to moisturise, protect and neutralize any damage. The cream is orange – that’s to the Idebenone – and absorbs into the skin quickly, leaving it feeling soft and hydrated. Continuous use of this product improves skin brightness, and reduces any roughness or dryness on the skin. After four weeks of use, studies have proved that the formula also decreases lines and wrinkles and minimizes the appearance of existing sun damage. I’ve used many products from the Prevage line, and ALWAYS see a marked improvement in my skin within a very short space of time.

This moisturiser is great for all skin types, but those that battle with sensitivity need to do a patch test beforehand to check for reactivity.

Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream (R895)

Kiehl's Pure Vitality cream

This new moisturiser from Kiehl’s works to smooth, refine and strengthen the skin. It can be applied both day and evening. Contained within the formula is Korean Ginseng Root that accelerates cell renewal, giving the skin a glow – thanks to its brightening properties. Manuka honey, endemic to New Zealand, is loaded with polyphenols (antioxidants) that strengthen the skin barrier, helping smooth fine lines. This moisturiser has a medium weight texture, and even though it’s a gel that absorbs super quickly, it’s packs quite a moisturizing punch. Because of this, I reckon normal, combination and dry skin types will get the most benefit from it, even though it’s designed for all skin types and ages. This formula is free of parabens, artificial fragrance and colour.

Optiphi Classic Complete Therapy SPF 20 (R774)

Optiphi Classic SPF 20

Optiphi is a proudly South African skincare range that offers highly effective products containing a range of ingredients like Retinol, peptides and HA. I’ve tried many from the line, and am always impressed by the results.

The Optiphi Classic Complete Therapy SPF 20 is a great daytime moisturiser that’s packed with a skin-boosting cocktail of ingredients, along with SPF protection. The formula contains Oligopeptides that repair the appearance of the skin, while decreasing the look of wrinkles and improving skin elasticity. Also included is Retinol that stimulates skin cell production. Hyaluronic acid works to assist with long-term hydration, while Vitamin C further ensures ensures a reduction in dark spots and pigmentation.

Only two pumps of this fragrance free moisturiser is needed to beautifully hydrate and protect the skin. Available at salons nationwide, click HERE to find your closest stockist.

I’d recommend this moisturiser for all skin types.

The Body Shop Drops Of Youth Youth Cream (R220)

The Body Shop Youth Cream

As with all products from The Body Shop Drops of Youth Line, this moisturiser contains the ‘Drops of Youth Concentrate’ – an ingredient that works to improve the skins appearance, thanks to plant stem cells.

The Youth Cream has a delightful, air-whipped texture that smoothes beautifully over the skin and absorbs really quickly. It works to soothe, tighten and hydrate the skin. Because it also contains salicylic acid, it may help with the appearance of enlarged pores and the odd breakout. The products fragrance is rather strong, so I wouldn’t advise this for those with super sensitive skin. It also most certainly does give the skin a bit of a glow. It’s accessible price, and pretty decent ingredients gets a thumbs up from me.

I’d recommend this for for normal, combination or oily skin types that also need the benefits of an anti-aging cream formula.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Crème (R1510 for a 50g)

Chanel Hydra beauty micro creme

I really like the Chanel Hydra Beauty line, and count their serum amongst one of my favourites (read HERE). So, when I found out a new moisturiser was launching with interesting technology, I couldn’t wait to try it. The new Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Crème contains camellia micro-droplets that work to hydrate and strengthen the skin, making it more resistant to environmental stress. The visible, stabilized, micro-droplets you see in the formula are not to be confused those nasty, environment disrupting micro beads (that most beauty houses are thankfully doing away with). Rather, these micro-droplets – with 5000 for every 50 ml of product – are jellified. When applied, they instantly fuse with the skin, and preserve the active ingredients in their purest form.

With the launch of this creme, Chanel pays tribute to the incredible hydrating powers of the camellia (Coco Chanel’s favourite bloom). Two exclusive actives from the flower have been extracted; namely Camellia Alba PFA and Camellia Alba OFA. Camellia Alba PFA continually and simultaneously activates natural hydration mechanisms and helps skin to replenish and maintain optimal moisture levels in the skin. Camellia Alba OFA is an active rich in polyphenols, which strengthen the skin barrier, and prevents water evaporation. Blue Ginger PFA, which offers comprehensive antioxidant protection against all forms of skin stress has also been added.

The texture of this creme is incredible – part gel, part creme, and absorbs in an instant. It doesn’t leave an oily film at all, but skin is beautifully moisturised immediately after use. It makes an excellent make-up base, and I find applying my foundation immediately after using this gave it a wonderfully dewy look. The fragrance of the creme is rather strong (as with most Chanel products), but after a few minutes, it does disappear. This creme can be used on all skin types, day or evening.

This formula would work well for all skin types, but those with normal and combination skin types will see the most benefit.

Filorga Skin-Absolute Day Ultimate Rejuvenating Day Cream (R1790)

Filorga URDC

This anti-aging formula works to firm, reduce wrinkles, boost radiance and skin texture and even skin tone. It contains a host of actives such as Extremozymes extracted from sea bacteria that boosts cellular functioning and renewal. There’s also a detoxifying vegetal fructan extract that calms the skin, and a white sapphire extract that attracts light and maximises the skin’s natural radiance. The two ingredients work in synergy to create an immediate luminous blurring effect. Also include in the formulation is Hyaluronic acid + NCTF that plumps and re-densifies the dermis. Also worth a mention is that this formula offers 360-degree protection against UV and infrared rays, as well as pollution.

This moisturiser would be suitable for women (or men) 35 year and older who are showing, and concerned with the signs of aging. Normal, combination and dry skin types will see great benefits.

Find Filorga at selected aesthetic practices and certain Edgars and Red Square stores nationwide.

I got to try the body shop drops of youth cream. That look like my skin type match.

These products look and sound absolutely amazing. I know Kiehl’s never disappoints as I’ve been lucky to receive a set as a gift. With our current climate which leaves our skin very dehydrated, these could definitely come in handy.

It’s a really lovely moisturiser, Cirsten – feels gorgeous on the skin, isn’t heavy or cloying and does a good job of hydrating the skin. Let me know what you think of the product, if you do purchase it. X

Hey Buhle, I’m really enjoying it and can assure you that it will be a winner for the dry, JHB winter. If you’re looking for a basic hydrator, this one ticks all the right boxes.
