Men and skincare…generally I find it’s a hard sell.

Most I know rely on the women in their lives to purchase products for them, and rarely give skincare a second thought. This is unfortunate because just like women’s skins, so too do men’s skins suffer the ravages of time, pollution and sun damage. Yes, their skin may be tougher and thicker (and more prone to oiliness), but it still needs care and protection.

At the very minimum, I’d suggest a face wash and two moisturisers – one for day (with an SPF), one for night.

This is where the Vaseline MENface Worst Face Scenario campaign is so clever! Haven’t heard of it yet? Check it out HERE and brace yourself!

This campaign drives home the message of just how damaging the sun’s rays are, and how they significantly contribute to ageing. To see what your man’s future skin could look if he neglects it,  you simply upload a close-up (preferably square) image of him HERE. It’s scary stuff, but sometimes I think men need a bit of shock therapy to drive the skincare message home.

My hubby’s #WorstFaceScenario #Scary

Luckily, because I’ve been in the beauty industry for so long, my hubby has become accustomed to trying and testing various products for me. He’s also very upfront about what he likes and doesn’t.

About a week ago, while he was packing for a short JHB work trip, he asked me for a day moisturiser that was wasn’t too heavy and compact enough to fit into his toiletry Bag. I knew he’d be outdoors for most of the day shooting (he’s a producer and director), it was essential that I gave him one with an SPF. Also, because of his colouring (he’s Cape Malay) his biggest concern is dark marks (especially after a spot) and pigmentation. He loathes anything that leaves any kind of greasy film on his skin (he has an oily skin type), but, at the same time, it needs moisture.

So I gave him the Vaseline MENface Even Tone Expert Moisturiser SPF15 (R81.99) that comes in a nifty pump pack. This moisturiser is specially formulated for men and works to even out skin tone and diminish dark marks, while hydrating the skin. It has an SPF 15 for protection from the sun’s UV rays. Also included in the formula is Vitamin B3 (more commonly referred to as niacinamide). This potent cell-communicating ingredient has been shown to improve skin’s elasticity, dramatically enhance barrier function, help erase discolourations and eliminate redness.

He loved the texture and fact that this moisturiser absorbed really quickly. He also hasn’t had any breakouts since he started using it (because of his oily skin type, he regularly suffers with pimples) and quite liked the subtle, clean smell of the product. After two weeks of using the moisturiser, he described his skin as looking clearer and healthier. In terms of the packaging, he gave it big thumbs up, saying he prefers pump packaging to tubes and liked the masculine navy and orange colours.

I’m liking the Worst Face Scenario campaign so much, I even uploaded a pic of one of my hubby’s work colleagues to show him what he’ll look like if he doesn’t start caring and protecting his skin. Obv’s I couldn’t resist uploading a pic of myself too…

How scary do I look?

So common ladies, lets get the message out there! Men need to care for and protect their skins. I dare you to upload an image (HERE) of your man and show him his #WorstFaceScenario – perhaps then he’ll understand just how imperative it is for him to care for his skin and avoid future damage.
