Just like the little black dress, a perfect black bag is a must-have for any women’s wardrobe. Recently, I’ve been on a mission to find one new one. My current black bag (a simple yet stylish Michael Kors tote), bought 10 years ago is showing signs of wear and tear. I asked local high-end brand, Via La Moda to send me a few options to take a look at. Below are my three favourite styles my tips for choosing the perfect black bag.
THE BACKPACK
Over the past two years, backpacks have made a real comeback. In fact, just yesterday, a fellow beauty editor (rocking the MOST gorgeous Pichulik straw backpack) was explaining how she loved the convenience of having everything on her back and not in her hands.
I must admit, the convenience of a backpack resonates with me; also this one is so roomy I can easily carry all my essentials and more (like my Macbook and maybe even a change of shoes).
This style is simple, but refined and I like the timeless silhouette that’s been given modern upgrades like the zip detail. It also has pockets to store all my necessities and I like its fresh, stylish vibe. The fact that it’s made using ostrich leather gives it a real luxe feel. TOP HANDLE BAG
This is a true classic and real investment piece that will never go out of style. It is endlessly versatile and eternally elegant. Because this is not a style of bag that is worn on the shoulder, look for a strap that is a perfect width for your handgrip. I love the woven leather pattern on this bag as not only does it look very elegant, it also hides ensures scratches are less visible. This bag will also work well for formal evening events.
This style, called the “Pito Leather All Assorted” by Via Venetta retails for R3993 and is available from Via La Moda. I have to admit, it’s my favourite and I reckon will be “the one”.
THE CLASSIC TOTE
I love this simple, elegant, yet supremely stylish leather tote with its tobacco coloured straps that add an element of interest to the very classic shape of this bag.
The mark of a good quality tote is studs on the bottom of the bag (although you can’t see them, they are a feature of this bag) – these minimize scratching that comes with everyday use. This shoulder strap is long enough and set far enough apart, ensuring the bag will still be comfortable when worn over bulkier items like a winter coat.
This “Nikki Leather” tote, by Via Venetta retails for R4180 and is available from Via La Moda.
It’s time to say goodbye to your bag if:
You can see holes, tears, scrapes and broken stitching. Tarnished hardware is also a sign your bag needs to be replaced.
Buy the best quality you can afford
A black bag should be looked at as an investment, so it’s worth spending more. This is a bag you’ll more than likely use on a daily basis, so it should be sturdy and well made. Also, if cared for properly, it will last for years.
Opt For Leather
Leather just gets better with age and lasts for years. Ostrich and other exotic leathers are a good investment, if you can afford them.
Consider what you need to carry in your bag
Think what you’ll be carrying in your bag. I know that for everyday I need to fit my phone, iPad, portable charger, wallet, make-up bag, fragrance, small brush and sunglasses into my bag. Because of this I look for a style that’s roomy enough for all my essentials.
